Thousands of students protested on Friday in Morocco for the third consecutive day against a government decision to keep its clocks at summer time year round, local media reported.

Pupils who now have to get up before sunrise to get to school denounced "a shameful decision" and a "farce", demonstrating in several cities, according to newspapers and social media.

On October 26, the government decided to abandon plans to switch to winter time and kept the clocks in the North African country at GMT+1.

Avoiding the switch saves "an hour of natural light", administrative reform minister Mohammed Ben Abdelkader said at the time.

The decision also reduces electricity consumption, he was quoted as saying by official news agency MAP.

The last-minute decision took many by surprise and sparked outrage and confusion, as the electronic devices of many Moroccans switched automatically from summer to winter time.

Needs of each region

Parents complained that their children had to leave home for school when it was still dark outside.

why do places change the clock in the first place?
how do you know what its supposed to be?

It happens the same time each year / you're reminded in newspapers and other media.
You get more sunlight in the afternoon to do stuff.

Imagine a fictional universal time that never changes, and in winter it's dark at 17:00 Universal Time and also at 17:00 local UK time. It sucks getting home from work and it's still dark, so the local UK time moves back an hour. So even though you're still waking up at 08:00 and getting home at 17:00 UK time, because you shifted back an hour, you're actually waking up at the Universal Time of 07:00 and getting home at 16:00 - giving you more time in the afternoon to play cricket.

Too confusing, so, the "time" on the clock is not the correct time?

It's always 17:00 on your clock.

If it's 17:00 and the clock goes back an hour you set your clock to 16:00.
But you still wake up at 08:00 and get home at 17:00 the next day. Nothing changes from your perspective except you shift relative to the time the sun rises and falls. And yeah - you're shifting time relative to the rest of the world that doesn't do this, so I suppose you can think of it as being 'incorrect time'.

I know lots of countries don't like having multiple time zones but.. i'd prefer that to daylight savings time introduction.. including in Sa. i.e. we technically should have 3 time zones..

We 'should' have 2 time zones, not 3. realistically, it wouldn't work though. Cape Town businesses would run from 8 to 4 to keep in sync with 9 to 5 in the rest of the country.

Also, daylight saving time is really more trouble than it's worth.

Three? Two at most.

It's really not that much trouble - a little confusion for an extra hour of daylight when it's useful? Yes please.

A fictional place?? Like here and a lot of other African countries, some US states and parts of Australia.
In winter I get up at 10 to 5 in the morning and yes it's dark and in Summer it's still dark. DST actually messes with people sleep, and it turns out that most heart attacks and car accidents happen on the day it switches.

Not 2? 3 would be overkill

You're not gaining an extra hour of daylight. You're just waking up an hour earlier? Also it's not a little confusion it can be quite a bit.
Why not just set your alarm an hour earlier summer and you've got your extra hour in the morning. Or you can come into work an hour earlier and you've got more hours???

Because the world doesn't revolve around my schedule? If I go to work an hour earlier one else will be there.

If you can convince everyone to move everything an hour earlier then that will work.
