In the Namibian desert...
Well as I mentioned over on the Braai Thread, I went on my first official Duneride with the local OffRoad Club!

Gee! Did I have a blast!

Been living here for the past forty years and never went on an official Duneride, been around the desert in a beachbuggy I use to own, but this was different.

Lucky for us, the wind did not blow and the desert was kept cool by the Atlantic mist.....

The chap that I went with has a number of vehicles, including a cruiser, but opted to take this old bakkie, reckons that it handles the dune sea quite well and it did....

We started of at the local OffRoad CLub which is situated down at the river on the wetlands.

We strapped the draught machine to the back of our bakkie and we turned out to be quite a popular attraction at each stop!

The South African border town of ALexander Bay can be seen in the distance from the top of the dunes!

How it works, an official car leads the convoy and makes the trail through the dunes, at various intervals they set challenges , these include driving up and down steep dunes, turning ninety degrees in a sand dip.

These trips are strictly controlled and happen once every two months, this allows the wind to cover the tracks.

All in all , it was ton of fun, but I do not think the club will be allowing me back again, seeing as I managed to trip the DSTV decoder power five minutes before the end of the Boks game.....

We did most of the pulling folks out of the sand, only to have the same occur to us towards the end of the day.....

For some odd reason this oke in the Amarok kept getting stuck....

In all fairness, it was his wife's car and I heard that he had told her he was going shopping quickly.....

Nice. I am planning to do the Naukluft hike in April next year. I'll stay a few days extra and see if I can fit this in my schedule.

Thanks for sharing, Morty!!!!

Always a pleasure Mr.D!

When we were kids here in the 70's , we played here, not worrying anything about the snakes and scorpions, and rarely was anyone ever bitten.....now that we are older, we think twice about this....

THere is a company in Walvis Bay that does dune trips up their end, quite popular and they provide the quads.

Can you believe it that it be Monday morning and I am still getting the silent treatment from the better Half , all because of the above event caused me to come home in a jolly good mood and accidently eating one of my offsprings pudding.......... :erm:

I see there is a proper rally on over at a town called Koes , near the Botswana border in a few weeks, wonder if I should........... ?

Thanks for the pics Morty ! Eish I miss my sons rugby tour trips to Namibia. I must really make a plan and have a trip again. Lots of people can't understand when you tell them it's a beautiful place even with all the sand.

Is it the company at the Lemon Tree Deli Restaurant ? They usually did the quad trips for us when we were there with the rugby festival.

Looks like lots of fun. :)

ps. Ironic that a person would have a number plate named "DIRT" when there is only "SAND". :p
