Ok! After Fort Reef we wound up our quick tour and headed inland and down the road to Oranjemund.

Here end's today's lessons!

I am just posting a few snaps that have not been posted!

Oh! To emphasise the size of the arch, look carefully to see one of our guys standing at the bottom of the picture wearing a yellow jacket.

True story here, a helicopter has in the past flown through this arch!

These are the type of pics that I am looking for, for my Windows Wallpaper. Can you maybe provide a link where I can get these in a higher resolution?

Most of these images are between 1.2megs-2.2megs. I downsized before uploading.

Let me know which ones you want me to email.

send me an email at stories(at sign here)oranjemundonline.com

When I started this thread, it was due to me sorting out some photographs on my HDD. Through this you guys have seen my area of Namibia where I have resided since 1972.

I am going to continue this thread with various other pics from my neck of the woods as some of you might find it of interest.

In order to get to the diamonds a massive amount of desert has to be moved to get to bedrock, after WWII , the mine bought surplus army stock in the form of Sherman tanks which they modified. Have a look at there Sherman's that were used to move overburden.

This particular ones were abandoned to the elements sometime in the 60's.

I will try to find a snap where they were in operation.... they look kinda space age....

Thanks, currently you still need to apply for a diamond area permit just to get into my town, as for getting into the other areas, not from here you ain't, do a search for coastway tours in Luderitz...

Here are two snaps from yet another abandoned town which I did not visit, this Elizabeth Bay, commonly known as Ebay up here. The German town long since abandoned, but the company has a multi million dollar plant still mining diamonds next to the town.... amazing to think that for over 100 years there have been diamonds coming out of here..

The picture of the Arch was taken from a vessel at sea, a different perspective...

We also have mines on the north Bank of the Orange River, the Southern boundary of the Sperrgebiedt. This stretches for about 90km inland. Also a no go area, although there is a dirt road connecting my town with a neighbouring town. This road, although public is still restricted. You need a permit and may not stop anywhere along the 90km stretch. It will be tarred next year.

The security department, has state of the art camera's that run off solar and are wireless that connect to the security control room in the town. These guys even have heat detection with infra red and see everything. Their camera's mounted on the tops of hills and mountains...

Here is a snap taken at a spot about 50km east of me.

Every seven years or so, the big flood comes, here is a snap of how the Gemsboks get trapped on the river just outside the town.

In previous years, the mine would use their helicopter to rescue the beasts....

Here's another interesting attraction. About 90km North of our town near one of the big conglomerate plants, is this petrified tree. It's the only one up here and was found in a dry riverbed about 2km from the beach.

I have actually touched this rock, but that was 20 odd years ago and it was lying down.

Always fascinated me, that after all this barren wasteland , how on earth did a tree this size and petrified land up here...

Oh! the chap next to the tree is Toivo, a friend of my late father's and an avid whisky drinker....

Alright, I have a few minutes to kill before the store opens.

I am posting a few more snaps of that particular tour in no specific order.

Some of you might be interested in some of the incredible fauna and flora of the area.... how incredibly beautiful some of these plants... how they survive in such a hostile environment is beyond words...

I have also taken the liberty of posting our group at the arch..... Exotic Plant Life (Large).jpg

Here are a few more taken at Pomona, check out the intricate woodwork on the buildings....

I have always had a bit of a thing for walking through graveyards, I guess more out of historical interest, wondering who and why lies here.... so this being said, it was really fascinating for me to see the various names at the remote Pomona Graveyard....

I really enjoyed this now, really fascinating ! Thanks for sharing the pictures. I had an uncle that was living in Oranjemund very long ago when I was a child. Didn't they use to scan you and your car after you visited the town ?
