Sun International het gesĂŞ bouwerk sal so gou moontlik *begin.

Sowat 6 000 besware is destyds ingedien.

So Morula Sun will be moved to Menlyn (well the license) and the existing building in Mabopane to be converted into a gambling academy & hotel school in-conjunction with the Uni of Nevada.

Good move. Like Monte I presume there will be a lot of other activities other than just gambling.

JOHANNESBURG – Sun International says it has no choice but to relocate its struggling Morula Sun Casino from the Mabopane township to Pretoria-East because it's inaccessible and continues to face stiff competition.

The group has submitted an application to the Gauteng Gambling Board to move the casino and resort to Menlyn, in a proposed R3 billion project.

Sun International CEO Graeme Stephens says the development will have positive spinoffs.

“The operation will be significantly more profitable than where it is at Morula. Morula today is an old license and it’s in a location now, which is very difficult to get to, and it’s facing a lot of competition from lots of alternative gaming and it’s going backwards as a consequence.”

But the proposed plan has been met with fierce opposition, with church leaders in Pretoria-East arguing that the development will do little to improve the environment or the community.

Community representative Michael Newman says, “It helps the unemployment, it helps to create jobs, it helps in terms of black economic empowerment. But again the social cost in the broader community, is it beneficial or not? Church leaders were unconvinced by Sun International’s position.”

The Gauteng Gambling Board has granted the relocation of Sun International’s Morula Casino and Hotel gambling licence to Menlyn Maine, near Pretoria, the hotel group said on Thursday.

Chief executive Graeme Stephens said the decision came after a prescribed public participation process in terms of the Gauteng Gambling Act.

The transfer of the licence from Morula in Mabopane would enable the company to build a R3 billion urban entertainment centre at Menlyn Maine.

“Morula Casino and Hotel has for some time experienced a decline in revenues due primarily to its relatively inaccessible location and the growth of non-casino gambling activities in its catchment area.”

Menlyn Maine, however, was closer to source markets and had good highway access.

“This will maximise the potential of the licence for all stakeholders, including employees, Sun International shareholders and provincial and national government in terms of gambling taxes.”

In the first five years, Menlyn Maine was expected to generate R1.7bn in gaming taxes and VAT, with estimated revenue to government of R2.7bn.

Live in the general area. No probs with this. More security companies around then hopefully. But yes, it will be right next to The Glen Highschool.

I am more worried about the traffic.. That area is already a mess in peak times..

/sigh

This is gonna screw up traffic big time. The roads surrounding Menlyn Maine are already congested and this will just make it so much worse.

Well, a short commute on Serene onto Aramist if you can get a casino job :p. They upgraded parts of Garsfontein road, now if they can just upgrade the rest of it. There are plans to upgrade Atterbury as well.

More time to be harassed by car-charger/bootleg DVD sellers and windscreen "washers".

Besides the staff.. how does gamblers work do they gamble anytime of the day or do they sit there till the money is finished.

All I have to say is. Hello armed robbers :(

Yeah, and even with the upgrades it's still a bit of a fsckup. Takes forever to complete, too. :(

They'll probably have security to keep the rabble away. But they'll just hang around right outside the boundary of the casino's property. :/

Between Aramist road and the school. Other side of the street from WorleyParsons building. There's a piece of empty ground with trees planted in rows.

I meant in the streets, especially Atterbury. There's already a small army of them. When the traffic gets worse, it will turn into a large army because victims will be stuck there longer.

Double strike for traffic. This and the plan to re-purpose Atterbury as a major BRT corridor.

They've been building for months now where the yellow circle is, I assume that's for something else because I doubt they will have been building before getting final approval, my money is on the red circled area:

This is going to F^*k up traffic in this area badly. Going to also introduce more unsavoury characters to the area and surrounds. Bad move IMO !
