A friend has bought a small car and insurance wants her to install a tracker. What is the most affordable one she doesn't need online tracking or early notification. She does need to be able to sms the car to check where the driver is sometimes. What's the most best option?

Whatever she goes for make sure that the product is approved by the aforementioned insurance company.
Common mistake made by people going for the cheapest options and then they cry afterwards

Tracker and Netstar both have entry level options which aren't too expensive on a monthly basis.

Rather go for one of them as they have full country coverage.

There probably are cheaper options, but you will probably find that they are as effective as a Pick 'n Pay car guard.

thanks guys
Someone I know had BAD experiences with C Track

I got a call from tracker - apparently they running a special
R115 per month
No device fee or Installation fee
R10 or R20 extra for the early warning

I'm having it installed once my new car arrives

In most cases it is best to go with the biggest brands available - C Track may be good in some areas, but cannot compete with Netstar and Tracker at this stage.
These are companies with a different focus market. C Track's main client base are the trucking companies. They brought smaller, entry level tracking later into the market. Fazda is right, go with someone like Netstar who specialises in this area.

First, ask the insurer to give a list of their approved tracking companies. Then contact the most recognized ones and get quotes.
Btw, there's always happy and unhappy clients/customers with ANY company. The PERFECT business is in the same myth-boat as the Loch Ness monster

I went with Tracetec as it ticked all the right boxes. Cheap (R89pm), painless fitment (works off a battery and doesn't need to be wired up), installation took 5 minutes and it doesn't void your warranty.

Coverage is a problem however, yesterday i decided to test the unit and it last touched base with a tower 1 month ago and they could not track it to where my vehicle usually parks as there are no towers in my area.

Where are you based?

OP also have gadget fitted that stops fuel flow to the motor, trackers are not as good as they get ripped out and you don't want your vehicle back when that has happened. The buggers wreck the vehicle looking for the tracker.

What about a self tracking unit? I doubt it will be insurance approved but at least it wont have a hefty recurring cost and it can be controlled by you, you can even get creative hiding it.

I use Netstar Cybersleuth and am not a a happy customer.

From their website with a date stamp of 2014.01.16

Altech Netstar is currently upgrading the Cyber Sleuth Supreme platform. Whilst some clients may experience service interruptions, our recovery capability is not affected. All trip data is being processed, and will be restored and available on the website once the upgrade is complete. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this crucial system upgrade.

Can one still get Internet Explorer 7, also it's a very weird resolution.

On a number of occasions trip details have disappeared. Their customer support (via email) takes days to respond, if at all.

My 2c.

We are having issues with C-Track - units were installed and now we realized none them were ever working... in any of the 10 vehicles...ever.

We have cancelled with them and are installing a tracking device that works with a simcard and we can monitor ourselves, the insurance say that the premium will go up by about 15%, which is more or less the same you would pay c-track monthly.

Moral of the story here - rather find another company than c-track.
