Most Attractive Race Chart

Cape Town - The University of Cape Town (UCT) student newspaper, Varsity News, has received a vitriolic response on Twitter after it recently published a chart polling the most attractive race at the university.

The pie chart, titled “UCT votes on most attractive race”, lists the races as Caucasian, Indian, Coloured, African, Asian, and Mixed.

According to the chart, the majority of students (38%) thought that Caucasians where the most attractive race, while the least amount of students (8%) thought that Africans where the most attractive race. Other races garnered between 10-20% each.

Some Twitter users, including human rights activist Zackie Achmat, voiced their disapproval. @ZackieAchmat referred to the chart as “racist nonsense”. Another user, @ednake89 tweeted “this is the kind of bull**** UCT’s Varsity newspaper publishes”.

The chart was published alongside an article by UCT student, Qamran Tabo, who interviewed sixty people; ten from each racial group.

According to Varsity News editor, Alex Nagel, the article was a commentary on how race affects social structure in the post-apartheid era.

Nagel defended the decision to publish the article. “It was an opinion piece and was taken out of context, Varsity News is a space for people to discuss issues and society,” she told News24.

“Many students at the university have received the article negatively and feel attacked and offended,” she said.

The newspaper has decided to issue a formal apology.
 
Meh - the small sample size and the fact that an even number of people per race were sampled makes it meaningless. They should have aimed for a larger sample size that was representative of the demographics of UCT.

On another note, why is this racist? Racism, as I understand, is negative discrimination based on racial grounds. So, if I say that, on average, black men are better sprinters than white men, that is not racist, but saying that, on average, people find white people more attractive than black people is? Why?

Yeah, its not particularly useful to anyone, even if they corrected their stats, but its not racist. Stupid political correctness idiots!

Beauty or attractiveness depends on who you ask and is a matter of opinion/judgement. Ask different people who is more attractive and you get different answers depending what race they are themselves (for example).
Sprinting and swimming proficiency on the other hand can be settled by letting the people sprint or swim against each other and against time. No judging or subjective opinions involved.

It's personal choice, I know of attractive people from all races.
 
Interesting that 16% of the sample was white, but 38% ranked white as most attractive.
 
They need to add mixed to coloured pushing up coloured to 29%
How can a person be "mixed" but not coloured?
 
Makes no sense to have it combined, it should further be separated by gender.

Because someone who is half-Albanian and half-Japanese would be mixed in Cape Town, not coloured. Coloured has become something of its own.
 
So, according to this black folks don't find themselves attractive? They accounted for 16.7% (rounded off) of the electorate but only received 8% of the vote. Ain't that a bitch.

Self hate. Incidentally, I was listening on the radio this morning and they were talking about black dolls. Apparently they are very hard to sell even to black people.
 
It's apartheid's fault that black people find non-black people more attractive.
 
If this poll were on an anime/J-pop/K-pop/J-drama/K-drama forum the results would probably have been 95%+ Asian :p

Just goes to show what an effect the portrayal of a group of people in the media has.
