I wonder why 1004 is so high on the list. It doesn't follow a pattern like the others nor does it map to anything intelligible on the keypad letters.

There are 256 possible pin number combinations (4^4). ......

More like 10000 possible pins. 10*10*10*10. this includes 0000.

Well, it's interesting: My FNB card is 4 digits, but my ABSA and SB card are both 5 digits

it has to do with the burden of responsibility.

with a signature, the bank has to prove it is your signature and not a forgery.

with chip and pin, correct pin means it is your problem.

now of course given you will never replicate the same signature every time, i would be interested how a signature dispute is carried out versus the chance of your pin being correctly guessed.

Nedbank has 5 digit pins. HUGE drive from the big boys to improve security ten fold.

Amex=4 digits
Visa/mastercard=5 digits
Other cards?=priceless

With Chip and Pin and no longer signature as a requirement the burden of proof falls on the card holder. If someone gets your card and guesses your PIN, you basically have no recourse. You gotta pay.

I'd simply present them with the known exploits and fundamental defects in the design of chip and pin.

They've got 3 tries to guess an arbitrary 4-number combination, versus forging a signature. I'll take my chances with chip and pin thanks.

It doesn't even require knowing the pin to defeat the security. Chip cards were introduced to shift responsibility, not increase security. And for a while banks were screwing their customers, but now that the massive defects are known they're having a harder time getting away with cheating their customers.

I think it is todo with the 10-code system as in "ten-four" aka yes/ok/affirmative.
