Most of Github is duplicate code - Study

no new new code? just people reposting code somebody else wrote?

well thats open source for you.

That's actually the whole point of opensource, being able to reuse code in other projects. You'll even find it in closed source code if you were able to look there (BSD, MIT etc license).

Git actually works by forking code and merging it back in, so probably at least 70% of all code is duplicated at least once. This is like doing research at AA meetings to discover what percentage of people are alcoholic.

The real issue though, is the way it is presented: "70% of code is duplicated" makes it sound like 70% of it is the same, which is not the same as saying that 70% of the code is duplicated from something else.

this article is dumb, or study i should say.

Or they dunno how to extend or add dependencies. I hate people that fork our Corp software internally and then management asks later why we had to support multi variants of the same code.. well because someone was an idiot that’s why.

Also brings into question companies that ask for resumes of github repos.. well 70% of that is replicated hahahaha
