An academic analysis of over 33 million images on Flickr has revealed that the flagship Apple Store in Manhattan is the 28th most photographed landmark in the world.

Flickr, which is owned by Yahoo, is one of the world’s most popular photo sharing websites.

The study, which was based on geotag data on Flickr, was presented at the WWW 09 conference in Madrid last week by a group of academics from Cornell University in New York. The aim of the project was to identify which landmarks are most photographed in the world.

The top landmark tag came up as ‘Eiffel’ while the landmark with the most regular yet distinctive tag was ‘newyorkcity nyc new york’ closely followed by ‘london england’.

But it was New York City that took the spot as the most photographed city in the world.

The top ten most photographed cities in the world are as follows: 1. New York, 2. London, 3. San Francisco, 4. Paris, 5. Los Angeles, 6. Chicago, 7. Washington, 8. Seattle, 9. Rome and 10. Amsterdam.

The top five most photographed landmarks are the Eiffel Tower, Trafalgar Square, the Tate Modern Gallery, and Big Ben.
