Hi everyone,

I've been using Telkom as my ADSL s/p for a long time and I'm starting to look for alternatives.

Who would you guys recommend as an alternative, my requirements are:
1) 5GB to 10GB monthly cap
2) Shaped or Unshaped
3) Good customer service

Currently I'm paying between R510 and R590 per month for my HomeDSL 512 account with a 3GB cap (that price includes everything, incl. line rental, etc).

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

How are you paying so little? The 512 line is usually r477 and the 3gb account 249.00 which is r726.00 per month

I really don't know. When I first got my ADSL I used to pay between R1100 and R1200 per month, then it slowly started going down until it got to a point where I pay between R500 and R600 p/m. I thought thats what everyone else were paying.

You will here good things on this forum about openweb. I am with IS and am happy with them- if they finally get round to improving their satellite links this month then more people should be more satisfied with their service i reckon.

I checked out the openweb service and I noticed that it's not longer selling SAIX based accounts. How does latency compare between SAIX and IS. I play online games and currently have fairly good pings through SAIX, will an IS account give me the same pings?

true. they will be offering a 10 gig/30 vpn account which is very tempting at R349. Do u use ur dsl primarily for gaming cos then that is one area that i cannot help u out at all.. ?

For what he's paying he might as well keep the telkomInternet account for gaming or as a spare - seems to be pretty much free atm.

Agreed. this is not the first person to have issues with the telkom billing 'system' but as long as its working in your favour dude, milk it :-)

LOL :D

h2jk, just to answer your question regarding gaming on ADSL. I would say that I take my online gaming serious enough to want good pings. But isn't Openweb an "on-top-off" service, in other words, they give you access to a Proxy server and you can choose which apps to run through the proxy and which not to? Oops, but yeah, its still through IS only so that means I'll have to change accounts anyways.

I'm not a gamer but I read elsewhere on this forum and on 1 or 2 ISP websites that if the gaming is international, then IS will not give you better latency because they use satellite for international while SAIX uses fibre optic. Fibre optic gives better latency.
Since TelkomInternet is currently softcapped, If I were you I'd probably stay with them for the moment. Sounds like you have a good deal already.

"IS will also be launching a fibre ISDSL service soon which will give our customers the option between satellite and fibre for their international connectivity on their ISDSL service,” they continued."

So when that's up and running, switching to IS' fiber optic for international connectivity will definitely be a viable option since it will reduce latency issues.

He's already with TelkomInternet

Instead of supporting the Monopoly that is currently holding back our economy, I say go for OpenWeb and IS!! (Avoid Telkom WHEREVER you can!) I am maxing out my line EVERYNIGHT with the best downloads from the IS news server. And the best part is, IS isnt capping!!!!!!!

Exactly. Shows you that he has some sense in considering a company that doesnt have the monopoly.

Unlike the Postman Pot and .geek that go around advertising them.

Fair enough he's shopping around but like I said to him - keep his existing set up or they'll figure out the billing mistake. By all means add on a IS account though.
