Im not much of a car fundie so im hoping for some good feedback here.
I do a lot of fishing off a paddle ski so there is a considerable amount of tackle there...i also surf most days and have a few boards.
I have looked at a number of the newest small/med SUV's including the ford ecosport, mazda cx-3,Renault Duster etc etc.
Problem is of course price and all seem to range from R250k upwards.I dont have that king of money.
My budget is up to R200k.
I do a lot of travelling for my hobbies so i need something very reliable. With space.
What older SUV has a strong reliability record that i could look at?

Jimny

...unless it is too small for your ego :p

The jimny is too small...ive checked one out.
Most of these older vehicles have high mileage, hence i ask about reliable engines.

Land Rover Freelander 2.
suzuki jimny - just very little space

The ar to beat is the older Land Rover Discover 2 facelift (2002-2004). If you can't find a vehicle better than this ... then buy it.

other options is a stationwagon ...
subaru
Volvo V50 / XC90

yes the land rover freelander 2 looks great...is that the TD4 engine?
Also what mileage is "safe"?

I also do a lot of kayak fishing. I bought a new Mahindra Thar (R209 000) and had a hard top built with roof racks for the kayak. There is no back seats so lots of rear space for all kinds of stuff. Went camping in November with all my kit and still had space to stop for a 100 loose pieces of wood on my way to the camp site.

It is a 2.5 Turbo diesel with 4x4 and rear diff lock. I use it as my everyday car(I live in the city).

Drawbacks :
Works for me but could definitely be over your budget if you take into consideration the Hard top with roof racks was R23k.

Not suited for family with children.
