Hi guys

I'm Busy building a pc for a friend and just need some clarification

He is getting a 2600k with a decent graphics card(hasn't decided yet).

He will be overclocking the cpu to 4.9Ghz.

Now my question is what motherboard should he get (budget R1500-R2200)

Should he go with a p67 or z68 and also whats the difference between the p8z68 and the p8z68-v pro?

the main uses for the pc will be gaming and video encoding.

any other advice will be appreciated.
 
Their are 2 major diferences:
Intel SRT - REALLY nice, give you the ability that you can have an SSD's responsiveness with HDD Space.
Display - have the ability to OC a K CPU without needing a discreet GPU.

I Would go for the Z68V non Pro, cause it is cheaper and does what the Pro does. Save the R400 bucks and get a better GPU or better SSD.

The Pro has 8 SATA Ports and the V just 6, and the Pro can Overclock a 100mhz better.
But that is controller by the Marvel chipset which is pretty crappy.

If You already have the CPU, be adviced that the chip might and some will not get to 4.9Ghz.
Remember that the more Volts you increase the shoter the life of the CPU. and the SB's does not degrade they just die.
Even at the 2600K's stock speed no card will be CPU limited even Dual cards like the GTX 560Ti in SLI will be limited.
 
The Z68 chipset has a few added extras over the P67 chipset, like Intel SRT and that you can make use of the IGP (integrated graphics processor), which is really helpful if you're doing lots of video transcoding

Both the Intel i5 2500k & i7 2600k CPU's include the Intel HD3000 GPU's, but the i7's one can go slightly faster.

The overclocking features on the Z68 should be the same as that of the P67 chipset.

I'd suggest that you go for a Z68 chipset motherboard, since it would make a massive difference in terms of video transcoding speeds.

Unfortunately the only Z68 chipset motherboard that I know of that would be in that budget is the biostar Z68A+. There is also an Intel one, but it doesn't allow you to OC the RAM beyond 1333MHz according to the specs.

From Asus & Gigabyte brands you can get Z68 chipset motherboards in SA from about R1800.

If video transcoding isn't such a priority, then I'd say rather go for the i5 2500k and like an MSI P67A-C43 motherboard.

Any discrete GPU will perform beter than the onboard Graphics. even a GT 430 has more power.

Both the Intel and Biostar boards have the same features however the Intel board has a 3 year warrenty.
Anything over 1333 is considered to be overclocking and is based on the CPU Clock ratio.
For video transcoding I would any way recommend that you get as much memory for the least amount of money cause you will benifit far more from that when comparing it to speed from 1333mhz even to 2000mhz.

Geogre: I thought so too, that the discrete GPU's will be much faster, but when it comes to video encoding, these Intel HD3000's makes mince meat of the discrete cards (even of the GTX580 !).

OK... Read some more reviews on the 3000 with Quick sync, it did manage to beat a GTX 460 in encoding which was a little surprising I must admit.

Soz Pada that one has to go with you.

However for Gaming it sucks and is beaten by almost 33% more preformance from a GT 430 than the intel 3000 graphics.

However saying that you may have a Discrete card and the SB intel 3000 with the Z68 chip's thus doing encoding you may use the onboard GPU and Gaming the GPU.
