Got this motherboard, 3.00 GHZ, intel m/b, and after 20 seconds after switching the pc on, the pc switches off.

Now, the heatsink, with fan looks suspect, but surely a pc that's overheating won't just switch off after 20 seconds ?

Can anybody give any suggestions as to the real cause, of what might be the fault ?

Some boards will shut-down of the CPU gets too hot. It might be something else too. Have you tried cleaning the mouse? :p

Your mobo can definitely shut down after 20secs if your CPU is getting too hot. It happens. Have you tried re-seating it?

Failing all of that, post the specs of the box and clean the mouse!

Remove the heatsink and clean off the old thermal paste, clean the fan blades thoroughly, re-apply some new thermal paste/compound, and re-seat the heatsink and fan... should solve your problem... make sure the heatsink fan is re-connected to the motherboard plug...
