The DVD-ROM caught fire and damaged the PSU cables with it. There doesn't seem to be any visible damage to the motherboard. So I have put in a spare PSU and the motherboard won't boot, tried a different PSU and got the same results, tried removing the RAM and it won't beep.

Tried resetting BIOS by removing battery, then also tried using jumpers.

Here is a video showing what happens when the power button is pressed:

Yup I'd say the mobo is finished. I had a MSI board that did that, replaced the PSU still didnt work, replaced the mobo and all is well.

That sucks. Just make sure your PSU isn't surging before you strap another board to it. This might be what killed the DVD in the first place. I have never actually seen a PC component catch fire in all my years, so I'm guessing there was far too much current going in.

How on earth did the DVD-ROM catch fire?

Not sure, it's exactly the same case as this though: http://www.carbonite.co.za/f20/beware-dvd-rom-lg-48265/

My initial suspicion is that some kind of component fatigue within the DVD caused a short circuit, and the 12v circuit received the maximum PSU current causing the fire. Proving that to LG will be another story. It also may have damaged your PSU and subsequently fried most of your PC. I would complain if it was me. Warranty or not, it could have burnt your house down if you weren't there.

That is hectic! Never saw that before! I got some smoke from a 24-pin Motherboard connector once, but I blame that on the PSU I was using. I say it could either be the Mobo or PSU or both. Good time for you to do an upgrade on those :D

When last did I open my DVD-ROM? Maybe there is a wild Limp Bizkit CD still inside? :D

Yeah true, luckily for me I bought everything from NGRComputers and their customer service is top notch, they have offered to have the motherboard tested and try to get the PSU and DVD-ROM swapped on warranty.

Did you film that at Ushaka world? I swear I could hear dolphins in the background!

NomNom i had a few workstation go like that on me. They where old P4 pc so just replaced the PC. It the motherboard thats fried. Tested CPU's on another PC and worked fine.

Good like getting warrant swop outs.
