I am going to run a freenas server. I have decided to custom build a solution for myself using new components.

So I need a few components. If you want to quote me please PM me. In the meantime I would appreciate some recommendations re the motherboard.

I will probably use the Intel Celeron 420 processor. It has more than enough punch for this application. So the board must take it.(socket 775)

I will use 4 sata drives so the board must provide 4 sata drives. It must have onboard VGA and sound(all do from what I see). It must have a Gbit LAN onboard and must be based on one of these chipsets so that the drivers mentioned here can be used( they are required for decent throughput on Freenas)

Two slots for ram is plenty.

A generous warranty on the motherboard would be appreciated.Hopefully that means the manufacturer has used good parts:)

So what does the world have to offer us for our needs?:)

Just remember that if this is running 24 hrs a day with 4 drives
it will produce a fair amount of heat,
so your choice of case is also very important as is your cooling system.

They don't need to be expensive but just efficient.

I will install a fan in front of the drives pushing air past them.

Then a nice big case fan on the side of the case should also keep the temps down. How is the 420 Celeron processor for heat? I imagine its reasonably low.

No recommendations on a board yet?

The 420 is very cool, any new motherboard will do really for your needs, even the MSI P4m900 that goes for R350 has got all that. Where abouts do you stay?If in EC pm me. If you are concerned about the warranty maybe look at getting a custom build system from someonr like pinnicle micro, carries a full 3yr warranty on the entire system.

I gave up on trying to find a board with Freenas driver support for the onboard Gb lan. have decided that the supported PCI Gb lan card at R125 is the way to go.

I cant seem to find reasonably priced board that have 4 sata connections and some external esSata ones. eSata will be good for off site backups via an enclosure off the system. Anyone got a recommendation?

What are various manufacturers warranty periods?

Asus P5K ... it has 1 external eSata ... I think it is a 2 year warranty ... not sure
