Mothutlung, near Brits in North West, was still without water on Saturday despite government assurances that water supply problems in the area had been resolved, the Democratic Alliance said.

"The DA can confirm that there is still no water in Mothutlung as of this morning. People are still dependent on the water tankers that are delivering emergency supplies to the area," said provincial leader Chris Hattingh in a statement.

"People have to walk and queue for long periods of time to be able to get access to water. To make matters worse, the area is currently experiencing a severe heat wave."

However, Premier Thandi Modise's spokesman Lesiba Kgwele contradicted the DA's assertion, stating the water supply had been restored.

"Water is 100 percent restored to the area. It was pumped into the reservoir yesterday (Friday)," he said.

Water Affairs Minister Edna Molewa said on Friday that the three pumps which supplied water to the area had been fixed.

"I have just received a report that the last pump has been installed," she told reporters at a memorial service in the township.

The service was for three men killed during protests by residents about water shortages.

Molewa said it would take some time before water operations were at optimal level and the reservoirs were filled.

"We will not rest until we know what caused this and who was responsible," she said.

Hattingh said it was a disgrace that people had to protest, and die, before Molewa intervened to resolve the water supply problem.

"What's worse is that she has now failed to deliver on her promise to restore water," he said.
