Johannesburg - Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe has for the first time publicly revealed that expelling then ANC Youth League leader Julius Malema from the governing party was a mistake.

Even putting Malema through a disciplinary process was “fundamentally wrong”, he explains.

According to a new book,* Kgalema Motlanthe: A Political Biography, expected on the shelves by next week, the ANC’s second-in-command wanted the party to find a “political solution” to Malema and the youth league’s misdemeanours – something Malema also pleaded for.

The book, authored by Ebrahim Harvey, states Motlanthe believed it was wrong for the ANC’s *disciplinary committee “to have inflicted the drastic sentence of expulsion on its own youth leader”.

He adds that the league’s *politics of “bitterness and hatred, and a *determination to hurt” President Jacob Zuma were wrong, but also said, “discipline must not be used to vindictively get even and settle scores”.

Motlanthe made various attempts to set up meetings behind the scenes to cool tempers, but these were “in vain”, Harvey wrote.

The deputy president *refrained from commenting publicly at the time because he “feels bound by the decisions of the structures of the ANC”.

In the book, Motlanthe admits that some wanted him to remain president instead of handing over the reigns to Zuma after the 2009 elections, but he refused.

He at the time told leaders, particularly Zuma, to rein in *Malema, but this didn’t happen.

Last week the league affirmed, yet again, that they wanted Motlanthe to succeed Zuma at the ANC’s December elective conference in Mangaung.

Malema has also repeatedly said if Zuma is voted out of power in Mangaung, he would reapply for his ANC membership and make a comeback.

Contacted for comment on the money laundering charge levelled against Malema, Motlanthe’s spokesperson, Thabo Masebe, refused to speak.

He said: “It is a matter for the National Prosecuting Authority and judiciary, and [Motlanthe] will respect the due process.”

Pity about KM - I thought he was a cut above the rest.
 
Well if there is a bright side to all of this it's that the ANC are not going to offer intellectually credible opposition to the DA any time soon. The systemic idiocy will see them losing votes at a nice steady pace over the next ten years. Surely the masses must be starting to wake up.

The next few elections will be interesting.
 
This isn't new. He asked for the "political solution" a long time ago already. Before expulsion was even on the cards, if I remember correctly.

Anyway, I find it interesting and revealing that no one can ever say what the hell this "political solution" is. My guess it actually means doing nothing, just putting some kind of dressing on it.

He's a politician why did you think him different? He's more of an ANC cadre than Zuma. By that I mean he's more likely to do what the entire party wants like he did in his short stint as prez. He eagerly toed the party line to sign the scorpion's death warrant and destroy the NPA by firing Pikoli on Mbeki's non-evidence.

Zuma on the other hand is no better except that his destruction of independent institutions of democracy is mainly to save his own hide. He's stacked the justice system to protect himself against the chance he may get recharged.
 
So it's safe to say that Motlanthe's first order of business once he is elected ANC president will be to reinstate Malema as Youth League president and also to instruct the NPA to drop corruption charges against Malema, and/or disband the Hawks like he did with the Scorpions.

Yes he'll convince the conference that it's best for the party to let JM back in. But the Hawks the current political masters whomever they may be so no need to disband them, but they're easier to disband because the con court has already ordered that they be made more independent.

Well, he can't do the latter unless JZ steps down as president and he is inaugurated. JZ will remain president until either a vote of no confidence, resignation or the next national election. And depending on the split at Manguang, the ANC might not get a vote through Parliament.
 
Motlanthe=he also leading the etrol thing. He stated the if etrol start to work, no price increases will occur.
Like zoempie, he reads his speeches to tell what the writer wants you to hear. Power is what he wants.

I think if Motlanthe is elected in Mangaung as ANC president then it also means the adoption of nationalization of mines and expropriation of land without compensation policies. Not at all good for this country. Corruption and looting of taxpayer's money will simply get worse.
 
There was an article last week or so where Mbeki's mother said she would prefer JZ over Motlanthe.
