MotoGP 2022

ForzaDucati

Shame for Fabio, sent into a gunfight with a knife but still rode like a beast

Brad with the pace late on and lovely for Suzuki to go out with a win

Yeah, stoked for Suzuki. It's a good thing for MotoGP as hopefully it keeps them interested with an eye to return down the line. We need multiple manufacturers. Already seen rumblings about MotoGP becoming MotoDucati and we don't want to see that.

Aprillia faded like nothing in the last 5 races, something went horribly wrong

Hopefully Honda and KTM come back with a better bike next year and Yamaha are also improved

Awesome to see Fabio come over and congratulate Pecco

What a final ride for the season,
Great races throughout the day

Fantastic ride by BB33 - can't wait for next season !

Congrats to Pecco, well deserved
Yip, shame for El Diablo, that Yamaha was the downfall 2nd half of the season

Pleased for Pecco, gutted for Fabio... Really hope Yamaha give him a bike to proper compete with next year.

Also, betting all my money that the teevee producer on that race was Italian.

I mean who doesn't want to spend forty minutes watching an Italian rider on a Ducati drop from fourth to ninth while the rider who qualified seventh does all the racing and rides the wheels off his KTM to get it up to second?

Was probably told by the Espeleta mafia to focus on Pecco or else they would extinguish a cigar on his nose

TV direction needs an improvement next season

As is tradition:

2022 MotoGP Awards

Rider of the Season: Torn between Pecco and Fabio. Pecco for overhauling that huge deficit and winning 7 races - but he was error prone. Fabio for forcing that Yamaha to do things it was not supposed to and being in the race for longer than he should. Only Yamaha rider to consistently score points against a sea of Dukes...Notable mention to Enea Bastianini. Gonna have to give it to Pecco for holding it together at the end
Team of Season: Aprillia - fought tooth and nail then things kinda fell apart at the end but they certainly gave a huge push with a good bike and decent line-up. Should be a team to watch for next season. Notable mention: Gresini
Race of the Season: Torn between Sachsenring and Philip Island - but will give the Aussie race the cup for its pure mental-ness from the first to the last lap
Rookie of the Season: Bezzechi - totally outclassed Fernandez, Gardner and Binder but he DID have a much better bike, He also DID do better than his more experienced team mate
Move of the season: Aleix Espargaro on Binder and Miller, last corner, last lap Sachsenring
Disappointment of the season: Tech3 KTM - the bike, the riders, the management - it just didn't work out for them. Notable mention Pol Espargaro, other Yamaha riders (except Cal - we love Cal)

I was fine with the focus on Pecco..... while Brad was on his arse. Most coverage we've seen of Brad the whole season :D Pity he got stuck behind Pecco and then to a lesser extent behind Fabio.. He needed that extra lap or 2 at the end

Yeah, recon those laps behind Pecco were the difference between second and first.

Still, other than Alex who won, and Marc who crashed, Brad passed everyone who qualified ahead of him in that race... the new world champion, the outgoing word champion, his new team mate and Jorge too... KTM need to fix his Saturday bike damnit.

I believe Brad was running a new chassis this weekend which could more than likely be for next year. If that is the case, then things are definitely looking up. He was plenty quick without any perceivable tyre drop off and had he not been stuck behind Pecco for so long, could have had Rins at the end.

All of this points to a much stronger 2023 so that is promising.

I think they are also testing a new frame this week

Tougher choices than in 2021. Mine as follows:

Rider of the Season: Probably Fabio. In addition to being able to drag the championship to the last race, he also fought a lone battle against the Ducatis with no help from his team mate or other Yamaha riders. Given the bike's performance deficit to the Bologna Bullets, he took crazy risks in pushing but still kept it upright. Notable mention to Pecco for being able to turn around that 91 point deficit.
Team of the Season: The Ducati Factory team. I think as an overall effort, they performed the best. The other teams only had one dog in the fight for most of the season (Bastianini for Gresini, Espargaro for Aprilia, Quartararo for Yamaha etc) but while Jack did have his odd off weekend, he was more often that not at the sharp end fighting it out for wins and podiums. As a unit, they were the most complete package.
Race of the Season: Probably Phillip Island. Any one of 5 riders still in it going into the final few corners. Doesn't get better than that.
Rookie of the Season: I'll go with Bez too but only because of his bike. The rookies this year as a whole just didn't cut it.
Move of the Season: Yeah, has to be Aleix on Brad and Jack at Assen
Disappointment of the Season: Franco Morbidelli. He just hasn't been the same rider since he came back. Fabio showed what that bike is capable of but he hasn't pitched. It's just not acceptable to be tootling around on a championship winning bike fighting with the rookies. 2023 must surely be last chance saloon for him.

In all the excitement of Pecco's championship, it was missed (at least by me anyway) that thanks to Brad's second place and Miguel's fifth for a haul of 31 points, the factory KTM team overtook Aprilia to finish second in the team championship. Fantastic result for them!

Nice to see Alvaro Bautista take the WSBK title, also on a Ducati.
To be honest, I'm glad Toprak didn't defend the title successfully. After last years victory you would have thought he surpassed Giacomo Agostini in greatness the way a great many of his fans were fawning over him.

Do you follow WSBK as closely as MotoGP? I must admit ive never really given it a chance and never got into the riders and characters involved..

I've recently been watching a bit of it and it isn't nearly as exciting. Nor is the racing as close as MotoGP. Right now in MotoGP, anyone of the six (well, 5 now that Suzuki has left) manufacturers could win a race (and did). Whereas in SBK, it's only Ducati, Yamaha and Kawasaki and of those three teams, only one rider for each is able to win (Bautista on the Ducati, Toprak on the Yamaha and Rea on the Kawasaki). The BMWs and Hondas rarely feature in podium battles, nevermind being in victory contention. It's the F1 of motorbike racing right now.

EDIT: The standings tell you all you need to know about the competitiveness.

I do, it's great entertainment as well and you'll recognize a few ex-MotoGP, plus some Moto2 and Moto3 ones who never graduated to the top class.

Final race of the season is in Australia this weekend so give it a go to shorten the long wait for next season's MotoGP championship :)

Seconded.

Love me some SBK.

Also, describing the racing as 'not as close' ignores the fact that the top three have been punching and counter-punching all season long in some of the best racing I've ever seen... Hell, Alvaro is doing things on that Ducati no other SBK Ducati rider has ever managed, Johnny Rea pulled off a Marquez-like save earlier this season, and watching Toprak in a braking zone is nothing short of astonishing.

One thing to remember if you're going to give it a shot, is the format which is different to MotoGP.

Quail happens Saturday morning and race one is on Saturday afternoon; then there's a sprint race on Sunday morning which sets up a new grid for race two on Sunday afternoon... Three races each round.

Sorry, to clarify. My not as close reference was more about the manufacturers battling it out for top spot compared to MotoGP than the actual on track action at the front. Agree with you fully. The racing has been close as heck. Toprak under breaking is a sight to behold. He comes from miles back. How he doesn't lose it, I don't know.

This phrase

Nor is the racing as close as MotoGP

Shouldn't actually be there in an ontrack racing context.
