Hi, I have always been fascinated with motor bikes .... I love the freedom and speed that it represents.
I am going to register at the lic office to write my exams ..... I have a one page application form for registration. I read a couple of responses on this forum about the different cc's and classes.
Is there a difference when I write the exams or does this pertain to the physical test itself??:erm:

Dude, when you do find out post pls, as i've eyed a certain VFR for some time now...

Writing your learner's exam for motorcycles is really no different than the exam for regular cars.

The only difference comes in with the controls.

As for varying classes of engines (cc's), this comes into play with what bike you're going to pass out with, if I'm not mistaken.

I never bothered with going back for a driver's license for a bike, so I'd like for those that have, to comment on what I'm about to say below:

IIRC, if you go and pass out with a 400cc bike, you're only allowed to ride that size motor and anything below it.

But - I may be wrong on that.

true wat S&B says...
except for the last part

my understanding is that the restriction is only for 125cc and lower
pass out with anything above that and you can ride anything
i think it matters if its manual or auto as well, not sure

You only get 2 classes of licenses.

0 - 125

125 +

As for the learners license, if you write it and your younger than 18 you are only allowed to ride a 0 - 125 class bike. If you are older than 18 you can ride any cc on your learners.

When it comes to the actuall license test you can only get a license in those 2 classes. So depending on which bike you go to the test with will indicate what license you get.

If you go on a 50cc or 125 cc then you can only ride 0 - 125cc class. If anything above 125cc you can ride any bike of any size. If you are older than 18 ofc :p

so say for instance, if pass out on a 250cc auto scooter
ill be able to ride a 600cc superbike with my license??
just a question, cos i need to go do the test ion the next year or so
and would rather get the full license u no

No, Auto restrictions also apply.

However that is mainly for scooters. So if you go on a Scooter you won't have a license for a Superbike.

If however you go for the license on a 150 CBR then yes, you can ride a 1300 Busa if you want :D

Correction. I did my license during apartheid, but this sounds right.

Do you have a car license?

If so, check the classifications on the back of your drivers license. That should make it clear for you. But no, you cannot go for an Auto license and then ride a manual bike. That should be on the back of your license card you have for the car.

Pitbull is correct ;)

I did my motorcycle license on a 180cc Vespa scooter :p .. at first the officer told me I would be restricted to automatics only .. until I pointed out to him that the Vespa actually has gears :p
After a lot of eye brow raising and discussing with some other officers they decided I was correct .. so I got a full unrestricted license :)

Good thing too cos I got a much bigger bike a couple of years later :D
