Depends on where you live. We go to our local municipality. Some places you can renew at the SAPO.
BTW some places take cash only, others cards and, like our municipality, cheques (cheques can't be over R500 each, but you can use multiple cheques to pay licenses over R500, yes true!).

I think that you would have to take the vehicle for roadworthy as license is due 21 days after expiry! There will also be penalties levied over and above the ridiculous licensing fee.

No. Just have to pay a penalty amount and the additional days that it is over due. It's not that hectic.
