Hi all,

I know there are a few insurance threads already but each one seems to differ.

I am about to buy a new car so looked around for some online quotes but they all seem very high. This compared to a few months ago when I got some online quotes and they were at least R300 - R400 cheaper than now.

What seems to be the best route with regards to insurance? Is there a "better" company, or are they all the same?

Also I have seen mention of brokers? How does this work and how does one find a broker?

I am over 25, been driving since Jan 2005 and stay in a relatively safe area of Cape Town.

Thanks in advance!

Go to http://www.hippo.co.za/ & fill in everything honestly & most of the companies will call you back. Answer all their questions honestly & get all the details of the quote, reference etc. but don't commit to anything yet. Then once you have all the details (premium, excess, fire/theft/3rd-party, courtesy car etc. ) you can start to play them off against each other & work towards something you'll be happy with...

First Link Insurance Brokers
PSG
Associated Insurance Brokers
Executive Insurance Brokers
GIB Insurance Brokers
etc etc

Use a broker it will save you money and frustration.

I'm with PSG (used to be Pleroma), been with them for 15 years. They typically bundle you house, household contents and car plus some other items like legal insurance and roadside assistance as a package. Works out pretty decently. They use Santam I believe.

I believe the 25 cutoff was increased to 26 or 27 in recent years. Miway were the only people who didn't lift this iirc

The Hippo site is a farce. All the companies quoting you are actually the same company (Telesure).

Try Standard Bank's online brokerage:
https://sbibonline.standardbank.co.za/

After registering on this site, you can fill in all your details and get several quotes (from different companies such as Santam, Hollard, etc.)

Thanks all, I had a look at some of them - http://www.oakhurstins.co.za seem to be pretty decent, they are cheaper than others.

I am unable to use Standard Bank's? Think you need to be a client to login?

Will still look at a few others in depth throughout today.

Thanks!

I would rather deal through a broker. Avoid the dealing direct type insurers, they have a history of issues when it comes to paying out. Brokers are better over the long term.

Go with santam. Pay a bit more but at least you will have decent cover. Outsurance is cheaper but they are crap and will try to screw you if you need to claim.

Yeah, tell me more about this...does Hippo give you a quote from Santam as well? :erm:

Santam is awesome if you never claim. Claim, pay your excess and wait for months to be paid out. Flippin useless company. Outsurance is crud. Get hold of Safire Insurance, there is a branch in Cape Town. So far not one insurance company can beat my insurance costs, and its an even better product than what they can offer me. Its not just the brokerage company you should be looking at, but the underwriters as well.

I'm not sure what you did wrong, but I have claimed quite a few times, and payouts were prompt  Perhaps blame your broker.

Sorry for the hijack but I too have seen many insurance threads and mostly I see brokers and Santam seem to be the good combo, or just brokers in general.
Santam gave me a nice quote on my 2004 Jetta 4 1.8T highline for R695, while Miway somehow gave me R811.
With regards to brokers, any good ones in CPT? I always look around but people get pm'd so cant grab the details.

There are many, I'm currently with Pillar Financial Services.

How are they so far?
So far looking at PSG and AON. PSG just by looking at their site and their presence makes me feel they are the people to call.
