Do you think annual, or even biennial, roadworthy inspections would make the roads a safer place? By making it a condition of your annual license renewal it would be simple enough to monitor compliance, assuming of course the authorities would act in an appropriate manner.

Theoretically yes.

In practice in South Africa? No. Too much corruption.
 
For, but only after a certain period like 5 years.

But being a realist and this being SA, not much will change. We know some vehicles get roadworthied without ever even being seen.

My Dad once borrowed a friends 4 wheels to get his car through roadworthy after he had bought it coz his own tyres weren't that bad but they would have failed roadworthy.

I once bought a vehicle when I was still a Roadie and I couldn't afford to roadworthy my vehicle and put it in my name so I borrowed a friends licence disc, scanned it and then spent a few hours editing it so that it looked legit. I even modified the crap out of the barcode so that should anyone ever use a bar code scanner it would just come up with an error each time.
Print on colour printer and voila I am legal for a year
Following year I just amend the disc again for another year.
Too easy

I know in the UK they scrapped the disks altogether five or six years ago - now they rely on number plate recognition systems for enforcement.
 
We have to at least try move towards better systems for the country, so voted for it. But we're also pessimistic.
 
careful what you wish for, before you know it you have the Uk's MOT's and road tax locally.

problem is it will be africanised by making it hideously expensive and inefficient.
 
While this is a good idea, it will be fraught with corruption and mismanagement.

There should be certain rules to when you would need to certify your vehicle eg. for public transportation (Taxi's, busses, Uber/Bolt/Taxify) and trucks/cargo movers/couriers you would need to get that done every 6 months, for fleet vehicles yearly, for private vehicles, once the warranty period has expired then yearly or if in the warranty period and involved in an accident then yearly as well

Now the kicker, this should be a free service, as long as your vehicle licence is paid up, there are will be no costs.

Until you get involved in an accident or encounter a diligent officer...

You were very fortunate.
 
For, but does it really work in Africa? Especially South Africa?
