Hi All!

I have the following situation: When I was 16 I wrote my motorcycle learner's test, and then a few months later did my driving test to get the "A1" license. This allowed me to ride motorcycles up to 125cc.

I stopped riding after school. I am now 31, and would like to start riding again. My question is this: Do I have to go through the whole "license" thing again, or can my "A1" code just be automatically upgraded because I am now older than 17?

afaik, you'll need to redo it all.

Which is why so many people just keep on with their learners (18months at a time) as you can ride anything.

Seems silly though, that the law sees someone that wrote a simple test as more able to ride a big bike than someone with an actual license!

Thanks for the response!

Cheers,

A1 should still be valid (<125cc)

To get an A, you'll need to do the drivers (riders?) test on something bigger than 125cc.

What do you want to ride?

the learners license was easy, the drivers license I passed second time around, I did them last year, was not so bad! I would suggest you find a trainer and take at least one class before the drivers test. check www.thinkbike.co.za

Ja, the A1 is still valid, but I don't want to ride a 125cc!

The kind of bike I want to ride is a dual terrain / adventure bike, like the BMW 1200GS.

Where did you do the learners? Are there still very long waiting times to get a booking etc?

I took someone to Bedfordview's testing station on the 15th of August and he is writing the test on the 5th of September.... not that long.
