I initially took a maintenance plan from 60 000km to 100 000km. I guess it has served me well, since I have had the breaks, clutch, headlight and all services and labour paid for.
Now I have been asked whether I would like to extend the maintenance plan from 100 000km to 160 000km for R13 000 or +- R340 a month (for the duration of the cars payments, +- 4 years left.)

Im wondering what you guys think? Good idea, bad idea?
I know its expensive, but at least it gives me peace of mind knowing I wont have to fork out huge amounts of money if something on the car breaks or needs replacing.

Your experiences, advice?

How many services does that cover? Sounds reasonable for either 4 or 3 services.

Sorry, I should have mentioned, its a 2007 Ford Focus 1.6
Services are every 20 000km's

Have you had the cambelt changed? if you haven't you will have to before 160 000, so then 13k becomes very worth while!

Cambelt at 90 000 IIRC - at least it was on my old 2.0 focus

I'd say do eeeet...after 100 000km's engineered parts just become obsolete and start disrespecting the driver and all other components it had a healthy working relationship with for 100 000km's...

Do eet, you won't be sorry! A simple formula to follow -

Work out how much you've saved from the waranty in the past -

Project how much you'll save from the waranty in the future - cambelt/waterpump/lights/labout/throttlebody/etc etc

This should give you a good inclination as to whether to do it or not...

Good luck with your chioice - oh out of interest, is that monthly payment calculated with interest or is it a clean amount you pay monthly, if without interest its a good deal, if with interest, try and get cash or get loan with less interest than what they offer...

OOOOH, here's great example for you mate - I paid R5500 for an extended 2 year mehcanical waranty. I've already claimed R1750 on the clutch.

Now I'm going to claim R1750 on the suspension bushes as I want them replaced - polyurethane ones, and I'm going to claim for the cambelt service I'm going to do end of the month - there is no limit for this...I'm going to buy the parts and they'll refund the money - R3700 last I checked excl labour(we are going to do it ourselves)
AND, AND I'm going to claim the front left CV joint - R1750 - so for a R5500 investment, I'm getting more back than I invested initialy...COOL!
