In August last year my wife got a Motorola Defy on the Redbull Mobile "RMB200" deal. I wasted no time in installing Cyanogenmod on the phone (this was before the Defy was part of the "official" release). The phone operated fine but suffered from occasional quirks (freezing, rebooting). 2 weeks ago I decided I'd "clean" the phone and do a fresh install of the latest version Cyanogenmod. That's when things went pear-shaped...
I (foolishly!) tried to flash what I thought was the original sbf file using RSD Lite... turns out it was an earlier Android version and I ended up with a phone that wouldn't switch on, never-mind boot into recovery. As if this wasn't bad enough I also managed to allow the battery to run flat during all my re-flashing attempts - and the Defy doesn't charge until it's booted into it's operating system! After lots of panic and reading, I pulled together ghetto charger, and managed to flash a stock Android sbf. I then rooted, CWM'ed, and installed Cyanogenmod 7.1. I reinstalled all my wife's apps with Titanium backup pro (great program!)
Now here's the problem - or at least my understanding of the problem... After installing Cyanogenmod, the phone doesn't pick up a reliable cellular signal. I've used the Defy baseband switcher, and tried a variety of different countries/regions - I know the Cell C network is 900/1800MHz. Cell C does work on 2G/edge (but the signal drops to zero every couple of minutes) and I can't get 3G working. I eventually find a version of Defy Baseband Switcher here that includes "Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, India, South Africa RT SEA15 3.4.3-331 @ 900/2100MHz" (this isn't included in the version that comes with Cyanogenmod).
Now, my understanding of the problem may be flawed - don't I need a baseband that covers 900/1800MHz or even 900/1800/2100MHz (in which case it should work across all SA networks). I'm not sure I'm understanding the GSM/UMTS bit - I thought Cell C's GSM network operated at 1800MHz, and that their new UMTS network runs in the 900MHz range?
Any advice / explanations / guidance will be much appreciated!
On the thread I link to above, the author states "If anybody needs other basebands included, copy the folder /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default from your Defy, zip it, post a zip here and write down out of which rom it is and for which country it is." If any of you guys have a Defy and are either running the stock rom or have a Defy that's operating on 3G, perhaps you can have a look in the folder and send me a copy of it's contents in a zip file?
