The ROKR EQ5 is that system’s smaller, portable brother. It has a very small form factor, allowing it to be carried in a pocket or a handbag, and features a kickstand. The controls are fairly simple and intuitive, and because this unit supports the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile, it can be used to remotely control playback of music on a Bluetooth device such as a phone or certain music players.
A couple of months ago, we reviewed the EQ7 Bluetooth speaker set, a fairly substantial desktop Bluetooth hands-free and music playback system, which we were very impressed with. The ROKR EQ5 is that system’s smaller, portable brother. It has a very small form factor, allowing it to be carried in a pocket or a handbag, and features a kickstand. The controls are fairly simple and intuitive, and because this unit supports the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile, it can be used to remotely control playback of music on a Bluetooth device such as a phone or certain music players.
However, as I discovered, playing music is not really this little device’s forte. The problem is that the sound is quite tinny, and lacks bass response almost completely. This speaker system uses WOW Stereo Surround Sound technology, but this is largely lost due to the fairly flat frequency response.
However, all is not doom and gloom: as a desktop hands-free kit, it works admirably. The sound quality is somewhat choppy, but this isn’t critical, as speech is nevertheless quite clear. The microphone ‘pickup’ also works very well– conversation partners reported some ‘scratchiness’, but no difficulty making out what I was saying, even though I was usually between a foot and two feet away from the unit, with it positioned off to the side rather than directly in front of me, while I was using my PC. This is the device’s strength.
