Someone here told me that I could save a lot by ditching Telkom, and I wanted to do it immediately! I did, however, hit one obstacle which at first seem tiny and now seem insurmountable: I thought my Motorola would be up to the task, since it has WAP, and it communicates with my PC. I tried to set my cell phone up as modem, but failed.
Ah, small hiccup. I’ll just phone the Motorola Technicians……..
I don’t have the number, but it will probably be on the Motorola website.
I contact Motorola via their site and tell them my problem. They e-mail me with the tel. nr. of their data technicians.
The technicians agree my phone would be able to act as a modem. They tell me I need the program Motorola Phone Tools, and the program would be available “any place that sells Motorola phones.”
Ah, easy. I’ll get to a store just now……..
I go to four places that sell cell phones and two that repairs cell phones. None of them have it. One of the shops tells me to phone a Motorola data technician.
I already did, but I’ll try again………
I contact the Motorola e-mail address again. This time, instead of stating that I have a problem connecting, I ask: Where could I get the Motorola Phone tools program? They don’t answer.
I phone a technician (again). He tells me the name of a specific cell phone place close to me where I can get it.
I go there. They don’t have it. But they promise a Motorola technician would be there the next day and I can ask him personally.
The next day, I go to ask him. “He’s not in any more, but he left this telephone number that you can phone. He also said Phone Tools is downloadable from the Motorola website.”
If phone tools is available from the web site, I can’t find it. As for the number he left, yup- you guessed it: The same number I’ve been phoning all along……
This third time I phoned them, they gave me the number of The Company That Ships Motorola Products In South Africa, The One Place Where I Will Definitely Get A Copy Of Phone Tools.
I phoned that place, and they told me they don’t have it. Not “We are out of stock. Come back next week/month.” Just: “No, we don’t have it.” .
Now, I even ask everyone I know if they don’t happen to have a Motorola that came with a Phone Tools data CD, so I can copy it.
I wish I could report to the good people of these forums that I followed your advice and set up my phone as modem. But it seems to me now that I would need a new phone to follow your advice. Unless, of course, one of you know how I can get a copy of Motorola Phone Tools. It is idiotic- I got a telephone which data technicians of the company assures me can be set up as a modem, but I consider buying a new phone because I can’t get software to do the job.
