Your thoughts on extending a car's motorplan?

Is it worth it? Is the extra cost to extend the plan actually proportionally cheaper than maintaining the car out of pocket?
 
probably not. You but peace of mind in most instances.
Depends on a number of factors, vehicle age, mileage, how well it was looked after etc.
Was the car yours from new? or preowned?
If it was yours from new you'll be familiar with how it has been treated etc. Someone else could have ragged it.
Also if it is coming up on some major servicing intervals it would be wise to establish a base cost for all potential servicing in the next 12-24months and work back from the cost of the extended motor plan.
It will probably be cheaper to pay out of hand for services etc, though as mentioned it may depend on service requirements etc.
An extended warranty may be a better call for mechanical failures and then pay for services etc when needed.
What car do you have (year/mileage) and how much are they going to charge you?
 
If you plan to continue taking it to the dealership then it's probably not too bad a deal and half an insurance policy at that.

If you are happy to take it elsewhere then it will probably make more financial sense to have an extended warranty and pay out of pocket for services.
 
Depends. VW quoted R18k for extending Comprehensive plan by 2 years, for R18k. I said yes. as it was a gti, and already 5 yrs old with 95000kms. Audi on the other hand asked R30k for one year at the same point in its life, for an A1...
 
I opted for a third party extended warranty and paying for servicing myself.
Works for me

My Toyota Corolla Quest motorplan expired in 2018 after 3 years. I extended it for another 3 years/unlimited km's for R 3 200. For me, it was worth it because of the small amount.
 
For what it's worth, I've extended motorplan on 2 Audi's I've owned. Neither would have cost more to self maintain/repair than what I paid for the extensions.

But the way I see it, if something even semi major breaks, you are looking at well over the cost of the motorplan. A third party warranty will generally cost you about R10k for a decent one, and not cover everything fully. Then you may as well get a motorplan extension, since this covers service and maintenance too.

If you can afford a R40k turbo replacement, R20k aircon or R70k gearbox out of pocket comfortably, then probably not necessary. It very much depends on the brand too. If it is german, get a motorplan, if it is Japanese, not worth it.

Warranty maybe, no way a 3 y motorplan costs that. Especially not unlimited km's.
 
I bought a 2 year extended warranty through BMW for my 320D. The cost was R13k for 2 years.. it covers all the major components that could fail. (40 individual components)
Last service earlier this year was R5k.
BMW wanted about R20k for 1 year maintenance plan. For reference 2013 320D with less than 60k km on the clock.
 
Just for info, Audi has recently dropped the price of its extensions. In may, my brother was quoted R22k per year for time extension as his car is low mileage.

Now with their pricing restructure in June 2019, he was quoted R27k for a 3 year extension, at Audi. This is comparative to 3rd party plans and much better to go direct if the pricing is similar.
Worth noting that they never offered 3 year extensions before. They quoted me a max of 2 years when I enquire last year.
I need to get a quotation for myself but have a few years left on factory plan.

Once you start adding mileage to the plan the pricing does increase.

I would like more details on this. Sounds intriguing. Was it full maintenance plan extension for 3 years? Or is it some sort of comprehensive warranty only? In the past you could only extend to 7 years or 200 000km maximum.

Full maintenance plan. Their entire pricing structure has changed, effective June.
I know this very well because a friend's maintenance plan expired in May and he was never offered the new deals.

Their new policy is that the maintenance plan (Audi Freeway Plan - not a warranty) can now be extended up to 10 years and 300 000km. I don't think the pricing at that level of km will be attractive though.

It seems the initial extension they offer is for 3 years and they likely offer 2 years at the end of that.
I enquired late last year and asked about 3 years, got told max 2 years as well.

For my BMW, it was worth it, but I only extended with time, not additional Km. Km extension was damn expensive, and wouldn't be worth it imo.

First year I extended it I broke even with the service, the second year I got them to replace the clutch and injectors just before it went out of plan, so I won a bit there.
 
You can also checkout motorite as an alternative full maintenance plan option.

Extended my 2007 Golf 5 GTI at the end of five years all the way to 10 years - first a 3 year/60k kms and then 2 year / 40k kms extension costing 30k and 24k respectively. in each case the cost of services and other repairs - brakes, faulty window mechanism/ battery replacement/ aircon compressor replacement etc. exceeded the costs of the motorplan easily by 20%-30%.

Also have a 2011 Mercedes C200 on the 8 year mercedes extended plan and the motorite seemed to be a lot more lenient in terms of intervals that brakes were allowed to be done etc.

It depends on the car. If it has treated you well with normal service, wear and tear, get a warranty.

I guess if you plan to keep taking it to VW for servicing it's not too bad a deal.

My GTI which was bought at 95000km as well and about 4 years old the time I don't think cost even R18k in total until the 198,000km when I sold it six years later.

But using a third party (but VW specialist) mechanic of course without the niceties of the dealership like courtesy cars and such.

Audi however has always taken the piss.
 
I had a 3 year comprehensive plan with motorite for a 2007 Seat Leon FR (basically a golf gti) for R20k. They ended up paying out something like R60k’s worth of repairs and maintenance from the stealers. Was easily worth it in my case!

It did include a major expense of having to replace the whole onboard computer though which was R20-30k IIRC.
