Mountain Bike Under R5K

Hi Folks

Can you please recommend a mountain bike for recreational use and the odd trial rides. Must have disc breaks and I dont mind a good condition used bike.

Also what size bike should I get I am 1.7m tall/short and weight a bit over 80kg.

I am in the Cape Town area.

I got this one last year from Sportsmans Warehouse on Black Friday. Also cashed in some Vitality points so in the end I paid R2900. Medium (26") should be fine for your height. I'm only a casual rider, but so far I'm enjoying this bike thoroughly.

Check on Bike hub, they have numerous options. You will probably be a medium or large frame. Lucky you are in the Western Cape that is where 80% of the good mountain bike deals are

Agreed, you will get better value for money going second hand, so places like Bike Hub are perfect. At 1.7m you should be a medium frame but will be OK on a 29'er otherwise a 27.5'er will be fine.

Which one should I get?

Thank you for your assistance thus far.
 
Those are all 26" which I wouldn't recommend, worth it to get a 27.5 or 29" definitely.

A large frame for someone who's 1.7m? No ways. Small/medium.
 
It's quite expensive for an (old) entry level bike, you can definitely knock some cash off that price. Offer him 75% of that

Agreed I have a mate who is 1.75 and has a large but it is probably to big, think small also won't fit medium should be perfect.

Trek is a very good brand but that bike is pretty old. The gears are also not ideal you don't want 8 x 3, rather 10 x 2 or 11/12 x 1. I would offer him R 4000 and then it is a pretty good deal.

I am 1.76m tall and ride a large and it is perfectly fine for me so a medium for 1.7m should be perfectly fine.

I doubt you will get a decent second hand bike with a decent two speed drive train and I am sure a single speed drive train will be impossible to find for under R5k.
