My system has developed an annoying problem - the mouse lags and jumps across screen as if the systems resources were maxed out by something and it was struggling. When this happens even clicks don't register consistently. It normally lasts just 5-10 seconds but comes and goes quite often.

At first I thought it was a new Firefox problem but switching to Chrome didn't help. If it starts slowing down and I close the browser the lag is still evident over the desktop.

I opened up system resources to see if a program was making the cpu spike but when I check it during these problem moments everything appears pretty normal.

I haven't tried running only in safe mode yet as the problem is quite intermittent - some days it doesn't happen at all.

Anyone have an idea?

Are the hdd's using a sleep mode?

I recall a similar problem and it was due to my hdd's spinning up(i turned off sleep mode). Vista issue but sounds similar.

Obviously testing another mouse is the first option.

Been having a funny problem like that for the past 4 days, so last night spending some real time investigating the issue.
I used WIn7's performance monitoring tools, I did not have high CPU usage, RAM usage however i did noticed that my disk IO was extremely high, after looking at teh HDD monitoring i noticed that when Kaspersky did an update and had chrome on, my C drive was maxing (SSD drive mind you),at the end it seemed somehow win decided to move my Page file to disk C and when i moved it my pc ran like a dream again.

Just maybe the same case as you, its just funny its round about the same time mine started and behaved the same way.

My little test to see if my pc is lagging when windows has its stutter, i Tap Caps lock and watch the light, you'll notice if you machine isnt healthy the light goes off and on slower than your hitting Caps.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Nice caps lock trick there Archie. I don't have SSD (HD isn't in sleep because I had some niggly issues with that a year ago) or Kapersky but that does remind me to try turning off Avira next time the slowness sets in. And will try looking at the HDD monitor as I only looked at CPU and RAM.

Will then try switching to another USB slot. And then try and find my old mouse.

Haven't experienced the lag in games, although I also haven't played that much of late so maybe I've been lucky.

Over the last few days I've found my browser would spike to 18% cpu usage every 20 seconds or so, at the same time if I'm typing at that moment, text would stop for a moment, then quickly catch up after that hiccup.

Thought it's one of my many tabs (usually have about 50 odd open at a time in Firefox).

Funny thing, now that you mention it Archie:
I re-enabled 'Page file' just the other day (some stupid game insisted that I have one) - usually I don't have a swap file, just the 8gb ram which works nicely.

Disabled it now again and *touch wood*, it seems fixed... :wtf:

As for the 5-10sec mouse freeze - my brother had the exact same issue: He found that unplugging the mouse and plugging it back into a different port fixed it.
