This sounds crazy I know but is there someone who could perhaps help me??

My 19 yr old decided to cut the mouse cord with a pair of scissors last night, the mouse was connected to the pc and the PC was on.... now the mouse was in the process of dying cos my African Grey can leave wires alone .

Now no mouse will work on that port , I even tried plugging a mouse into a serial plug and that wont work either.

Im going to commit murders , this is a 4 month old P4!!!!!!!

My question is this .. what damge could he have done by cutting the wire , secondly why wont a mouse work off the serial port , and would a USB mouse work???????

The box is of course sealed tighter than fort knox... and im not about to fiddle because that will mess up the guarentee.

Any suggestions please.....................

It's conceivable that cutting the cord shorted something out.

I dont see why a USB wouldnt work.

Quick qn - why did your 19 year old son cut the cord?

the mouse ps2 port has data, ground, 5v and and a clock signal.

yes, you can damage it by cutting the cord. most ps2 ports have an inline fuse though, on the motherboard. this will be a small rectangular surface mount component, either white or green in colour, with an "F" lable near it, like F3 or similar.

just forget about it and buy a usb mouse. why couldnt you get a serial mouse to work? probably because they require a bit of setting up, normally not just plug and play solutions, so i would probably guess that you just didnt do it correctly.

Thanks gents..

he cut the blasted wire because he doesnt think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I checked the bios the serial port is enabled.

If I knew the keboard commands I could probably get it right, thanks to the same brightspark..my pc knowledge is above average having to fix up his buggerups

I can get to the mouse setup using the keyboard but I can get it to open the tabs so i can install the damm thing

lol, my brother ripped my keyboard out of the PS2 port and now NO keyboard works on it. Bought a USB keyboard...at least this works. I was hoping it was the keybaord that got damaged and not my mobo :(

Kids:rolleyes:

he is actually very clever .... but unfortunately not clever enough to LISTEN !!!
im not a happy bunny .... my game is on that PC it wont run on my older pc :(

Hitting 'tab' repeatedly should cycle you to/through the tabs :)

To cycle tabs, use CTRL+Page Up/Page Down .. OR CTR+Left/Right arrow keys.

I mostly use my mouse for gaming only :P

Ta ..i discovered that on a web search and located the "hardware" on the mouse thingie ... however how do i select the properties.. pressing enter doesnt work ??

Carolsclan... there is ofcourse a VERY easy way out of this - return the pc and say the mouse won't work. They don't need to know what happened... just... it don't work - fix it!

They may suggest using another port - but you could always say that you prefer using the port it was plugged in and as the pc is under warranty, you want it fixed. They will be obligated to replace the mobo... doubt they would figure out the cord was cut!. - unless they ask for the mouse - I suggest you get another one that plugs into the same port just for show :)

nope Karma and all that .....

Ill phone a pal of mine tomorrow and he can talk me through it .... thanks a million tho.

No game tonight:( sniff i wonder whats on offer on the dish ???

im going to rehome the brat ..ill trade him in for another parrot /dog/cat

i still can't figure out why he cut the cable... you said he didnt listen to what you had said... did you give him the impression to cut the cord ???

I can just imagine the love in the house right now!. :D

To select options and deselect them with your keyboard, press SPACE.

"sigh" u obviously dont know teenagers ...... this one first formatted my harddrive at the tender age of 2 ..... this started my career in basic PC fixing he hasnt not yet stopped buggering things up ,..... and I have warned him time and time again that before he does something to stop and think..... as I said the mouse was tired and he decided to end its misery the hard way ... without as usual THINKING about what he is doing.

Anyone want him ???? he comes free ... just has a huge appetite ...
