So I am in my mid 20s- suffering from exhaustion.

I have always been a moth breather since young- I was taken to severall doctors and ENTs and not a single doctor ever highlighted how serious the problem is or could be so it was not stopped.

A few years back when doing a sinus scan a deviated septum was detected.

On futher research on mouth breathing I noted I have all the phsical deformities associated with the condition- Receding jawline, crooked nose and tired eyes amongst others.

So at this point I really need to sort things out- I am unable to cope with the demands of my job due the permanent exhaustion I am facing (Especially highlighted while working from home)

I will be visiting the ENT and I suspect I will be made to do a septoplasty.

I also am considering maxo facial surgery to correct my jaw.

I would like to know if anyone has gone through a similar process- and if it was beneficial or not. (I have lost a lot of faith in doctors who failed to identify this issue previously)

I am also considering other options that may have helped others

Doctor recoomendations will also be appreciated (I am on medical aid with limited disposable income so nothing that will break the bank). I am based in Johannesburg.

Went for sinus surgery about 5 and a bit years ago(deviated septum the main issue with some deformation from a hard knock when I was younger)

I still regard it as worth it. It was however not fun, the surgery took a few hours longer than planned and I was man down for a week and probably only really started getting better 3 weeks later. Also if you live in GP don't go in winter as the dry air was hell with only breathing through my mouth.

On another note I went through a similar situation as you and only really managed to find some answers when I was in my late 30's after lots of doctors testing thyroid and iron levels and then looking at me like I'm just complaining about nothing. I would struggle with energy and would often spend a weekend on the couch as I had no energy for more. In my case I finally found a decent doctor who did a full panel of tests and it ended up being Adrenal fatigue. Just taking some vitamin D supplements, probiotics doing some stress management and I feel good enough to want to exercise and get outside which helps even more. Not saying this is your issue but consider testing for it if you think the symptoms line up.

Thanks for your response.

Just not sure about going to hospital with COVID around so might postpone it. I am in Jhb so will take into account.

I pretty much do nothing on weekends from exhaustion as well so was thinking it is the breathing but will assess the possibility of something else- perhaps after the breathing is sorted out. Thanks though.

Tape your mouth closed.
No I'm not joking.
I mean sure - you'll look funny but...

I did actually try it for a few nights because I also breathe through my mouth. Used white surgical tape. Didn't notice much difference in sleep quality so didn't bother again.

Also, try resting your tongue against the roof of your mouth behind your teeth. Harder to breathe through the mouth like this.

I have tried the taping before but the tape never makes it to the morning- and also have not noticed any noticeable difference and my mother thought I would die in my sleep.

will try the tongue resting.

Have also been trying Buteyko Breathing which some claim works wonders but I am yet to see the effect thereof-

You eating well and exercising?
Cutting down on staring at the screen right before bed?
