Move away from mobile broadband: minister

Too bad that "mobile broadband" is kicking "fixed broadband"'s ass...

make fixed line more affordable and get rid of LLU... split telkom up, then maybe we'll leave mobile broadband...

...until then we'll use mobile broadband to fulfill our needs.

Seriously though, just a glance at landline versus mobile offering:
A fixed line costs R300+ pm and you can't do anything with it yet.
A mobile data SIM with 1GB is R99 pm.
 
Guys, what he is saying is 100% correct. Think about it. 2GB bundle and maybe about 2 GB out of bundle = R 1k easy.

You can get uncapped ineternet for around 1/2 that price. Or let's say the same price... It just makes sense. Unfortunately so many people have no choice in the matter as there is no alternative.

You can get 4GB per month from Afrihost Mobile for R145 per month.

Yes. And that may well be sufficient for a single family, but a school?
It would be great if they use this realization and kick Telkom into action so that we actually have the option of using fixed lines everywhere.

So they want 100% broadband penetration, but a massive part of the country is still without reliable or any form of electricity?

Well you can't really fap to or learn anything from a hot stove or a switched on light bulb now can you. So I reckon they have their priorities in order.

That would be a pretty terrible thing to do.

Also, what would splitting up Telkom achieve exactly?
 
Like telling us that we must not become over reliant on our vehicles as a means of transport......

Provide a viable alternative and the masses will follow.

Neotel was given a license and see how well that turned out... The problem with letting private companies do all the legwork is that they'll only go for profitable areas. That means high density, affluent parts of the country. Private companies won't do much to further the situation of the poor without being incentivised somehow.

You do have a point, maybe I'm just a bit biased due to seeing how England runs theirs, my uncle up there is hitting 100mb :/ Normally the competition helps growth....

So my Sunday downloads would cost about R1200. That's R4800 a month just on Sundays.

You can keep your 3G, leave my ADSL alone.
