Move to outlaw texting, calling while cycling

Flip man, can't they get their priorities right in New York??!!

Over ten people have drowned in the past 18 months. They should ban swimming.

And then there are all those shower deaths. And broken ankles falling down stairs. We really need laws to regulate staircases. And the schools should be made to teach kids how to use stairs safely.

Get a grip, NY.

I see your point, but in this case they killed other people, when you go to swim, you don't cause others to die do you?

They should actually ban cyclists, just because they're a pain in the ass.

Also how much of a wuss do you need to be to die from being hit by a bicycle? Unless it pushes you in front of a bus I don't see how..

Could be a serious injury that escalated to death (head injury), but I also can't see how this happened? Maybe at high speed? Even then how the hell did he use a phone then....?!

Two people in "recent " years? Out of a population of 10 million this is not an issue. In fact with those stats texting while cycling is pretty safe. Humans just can't get their heads out of the village.

That sounds like a logical fallacy.

Care to explain?

Two people were killed by texting cyclists therefore texting while cycling is dangerous is certainly a logical fallacy.

Who cycles and texts?
That's just dumb.

I've had a major tumble just putting my water bottle in it's cage.

A cyclist can lose control and kill three pedestrians just by readjusting his balls. They should make a law about that while they're about it.

You are probably one of those texting drivers and see nothing wrong with it. Please put some warning stickers all over your car so we can see what a nob you are

Probably? Conjecture much? I obviously touched a raw nerve somewhere - why else do you sink to an uncalled-for personal slight...

I don't text even when stationary. :p

Just to spell it out for your benefit: I am against more silly laws. I am not against safety.

S'pose you want a law mandating airbags on bikes, eh.

I am all for having applying the same rules for all vehicles on the road. And a bicycle is a vehicle. Therefore, if you drive drunk on a bicycle, you are a risk on the road. If you speak on your phone, you are limiting your focus and also a risk. If you are texting, even worse.

And while this is top of mind. Cyclists should get fines for breaking road rules.

They should ban flying too. Nobody should be allowed to fly, as 1 in every 100 million flights go down in disaster.

Exactly- this is BS. Where / when will they draw the line and stop creating work for themselves?

Enforce existing laws rather than dreaming up ever more obscure new ones...

I'm cycling to work in London ATM- pedestrians on their phones are more dangerous to themselves and those around them than almost anything else. People are just oblivious. Sommer strolling out in front of car/bus/bike..

Of these people killed in NYC, I'd love to know how & whose 'fault' they decided it was.

Like drunk driving or talking on a phone puts the blame on a driver, the same should be true for pedestrians...

So much fail in one comment.

So you are saying that pedestrians are more dangerous texting as they are just oblivous to their surroundings however a person texting on a bike will have no such problem and be more alert and attentive?

I agree with banning texting while cycling. Fckers don't watch where they ride and shake their heads at you when they come close to you. Think bike? No think car, prick.
