Moved to prepaid meter

So today got my prepaid meter. Load R300 and it gave me 68.3kwh. That's R4.39!! This is the first time I purchased electricity so technically I should be on tier 1 and I am on Tariff A. Are there any hidden costs?

Before changing, our electricity is around R300 pm as we get 100 x 3 units free so looks like we are paying more for electricity on prepaid?

You should get over 100 units for R300 but depends when you purchase. Try buy electricity on the 1st of every month, you will get more units (not sure why) . When I bought tokens, the service provider took 10%

When you buy is completely irrelevant.. it's how much you use and then subsequently buy that matters.. it works on a sliding scale.. the more you use, the more you pay when next you buy in the same month.. oversimplified example:

Tier 1 is 10 units at R1 per unit
Tier 2 is 10 units at R2 per unit
Tier 3 is 10 units at R3 per unit

On the 1st you buy 10 units.. Come the 17th, you need more and buy 10 more units.. you have now spent a total of R 30 for 20 units.. on the 25th you need more units and buy 10 more.. now you have spent R 60 for 30 units as opposed to just R 30 if it were a flat rate..

So does it make a difference if you buy R500 at the start of the month or buy for example 5 lots of R100?
