Movie editing software

Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro is both professional software packages, hence the price.

We (company) easily pay for the software with one editing job, so price of software is not really an issue.

If you are looking for something just to cut some home movies with, and capture via firewire, then you might as well go for the free AVID software.

Premiere and FCP, has got a LOT of features that you will probably never use if you are not a video editor by trade.

AFAIC, Premiere is easier to use than FCP but Premiere crashes a lot and it often corrupts its savefiles. FCP really rocks
as it NEVER crashes, and despite a steeper learning curve it's a killer app to use.

In my experience Premiere has never crashed on XP nor Vista

Hi,

Does anyone have any suggestions for decent movie editing software.
My key requirement is ease of use (cutting, pasting, joining, title design, adding sound effects, etc).

I used Roxio for a while, but it is too limited (i think) and too cumbersome for an amateur like me.

thx

I swear by Vegas. It hasn't got the load of features than Premiere has BUT it's much easier to use (I just started without the manual and only looked at it when I want to do masks and track motions) and has quite a range of transitions and other features.

My key requirement is ease of use
Vegas it is. :D

I can't vouch for any of the other apps but what I like about Vegas over Premiere is the effects are rendered in realtime. No need to render those clips to see what the end product is going to look like.

Premiere often crashes. If you've been lucky, good for you. Do a Google search on how bad it is, and also on how sometimes it crashes and you loose your savefile and the backups.
This happened to me once. Let me say that it was a LOT of work which
was lost. The savefile was just corrupted beyond repair and the backups
despite being automatically saved were at least 24-48hours old, too late
to save me. This all on a 2GB system which was capable of running FEAR, DOOM3
and AC without once crashing - so it's not all just Windows' fault.

Eish, i can imagine you won't wanna touch it after that. Luckily for me then it is still crashfree

Yeah and considering that are other people who have ripped their hair out over what Premiere did to them... :). Just remember, use SAVE AS, a lot and save to other HDs, even USB sticks.

FCP was actually written by the same people who wrote the original Adobe Premiere. They left and headed for Apple while Adobe was left with a product with few knowledgeable coders. Hence the current Premiere mess. They may have improved it in the current release, but I already invested in Apple and FCP (and my Adobe Premiere system is next to it anyhow) so I won't be giving the new Premiere a try.

If VEGAS costs R700, its definately the way to go, its a decent package.

I can support that, i have a friend who is using it and the work she is doing on it is quite amazing and there is nothing you can't do on it compared to Premiere or FCP for the average user. ;)

I finally took the knock and got Adobe Premiere Elements 3.

And I must say...it kicks butt. After doing an actual tutorial from capturing actual video to burning a DVD (about 2 hours) I was ready to go.

I just could not believe the power this piece of software has and the level of professionalism it allows an amateur...and I'm sure I've only explored a fraction of its functionality.

Adobe rules!!!!!!!!! :D
