Den sidste viking (2025)

Danish language. An excellent performance by Mads Mikkelsen as a traumatised man. Treat your children right. 7/10

Sicario 1 & 2
7.5 / 10
Gritty no holds bared.
Just the way I remember them.
The "border scene"   could watch that a million times.

One VFX-heavy scene in Sicario takes place as a motorcade of secret ops vehicles, transporting a drug cartel kingpin, approaches a bridge leading to the U.S. border station. The heavily armed group gets stuck in a traffic jam and a dramatic shootout follows.

“There was no way to make this sequence without CG,” Morin explained. “It looks like the scene was shot on a bridge, but that is not the case.” In fact, the border crossing was filmed in an open field, where the production team had constructed a four-lane highway with 500 feet of asphalt. Containers were placed on both sides of the roadway to create the border crossing. Bluescreens were positioned at each end of the ‘highway’ and Oblique FX went to work extending the scene outwards on both sides using reference photos from the area around El Paso and Juarez. The studio then added CG cars, a bridge, and a matte-painted horizon. Bullet impact marks, blood splatter, blood mists, and wounds were also all added in CG.

That was a brilliant scene.

A Lot Like Love (2005)

A cute romcom that's a little bit drawn out. Nice soundtrack.

Avatar: Fire and Ash 6/10

We didn't have any power for 1.5 days, so I was forced out of the house. I made the mistake of selecting 4DX to watch it in, which basically turns the movie into a rollercoaster ride which really doesn't add anything to the experience, since the movements and action are only vaguely tied together. One funny bit was the girl 2-3 chairs over who's shoe landed up next to me for a third of the movie.

Overall I liked it more than the previous movie, but its just more of the same script, characters and events as in #2. Both the writing and the characters are weak, they also break the whole setting where supposedly the Na'vi are much closer to their world unlike us humans, but the new enemy Na'vi are the opposite and trying to kill the others; so in the end there's no difference between us and them anymore.

Mean Girls (2004)

Fun movie, good writing, plenty funny moments. Enjoyed this more than I was expecting to.

In the Land of Saints and Sinners - 2023. Set in 1974 rural Ireland around the height of the IRA's activities. Really well directed and good performance by Liam Neeson, better than a lot of his past action stuff. Characters could have done with more development, but entertaining, tense and gripping. 8/10.

Easy A (2010)

@purple face didn't show up for girls night so I watched this by myself. Enjoyed this as well - might've enjoyed it more than Mean Girls. Emma Stone is good and it's a fun, easy movie. This concludes my January girls night.
