Is this based on an anime or something? I watched the trailer and whilst I understand, I also have no idea. It looks interesting. Weird. Maybe good?

Yeah, no - the story works for the kind of movie this is. In an all-out action movie, we kinda just need to know who's good, who's bad and let the action kickoff...too much exposition or character development is a hindrance or a different movie.
Looks pretty kak and it's maybe the first time I've been annoyed by Kate Blanchett in a trailer.
I'm with you, I love BL and hope its good...but the casting feels really weak
They seriously casted that midget as Roland and Cate Blanchett who's probably in her 50s as Lilith. I was never really a fan of the games' story as the characters were too ridiculous and muted the audio but this is really ridiculous.

The BL1 story was still a bit bland while BL3 was just stupid.
BL2 however had some awesome stories and characters.
Best I can do is one or two laughs.

That looks amazing but also kind of wish I hadn't watched it. Hopefully I've forgotten about it when it comes around.

I'm guessing instead of asking people why so serious, he asks why so emo.
If they just called this something else unrelated to The Crow it actually looks like a decent popcorn action movie. As something related to The Crow it looks stupid and tonally and visually bearing very little resemblance to the original.
