How do I do a forced movement of a .co.za domain?

Our client first had his five page website replaced with a "this site suspended for non payment" page by his previous hosting company. He then forked over more than R2,000 for the "arrears" incurred since June 2009 and asked us to move the domain.

We host a number of .za sites and have never had any issues with domains being moved to us (or from us), but the current "hosting provider" not only listed themselves as the owners of the domain, but they're ignoring the requests from Uniforum's robots.

In other words these twits blackmailed my client to the tune of over R2,000 for something that probably cost them R50 and now they won't let the guy leave.

How do I do a "manual override" ?

Last I heard, an official request from the company whose name is the domain on a letterhead to Uniforum was the way to go. So, for example, if Delta Traders that retail used cars wants to move deltatraders.co.za and the previous registrars are being difficult, a letter from them faxed to Uniforum gets it done.

They will however have problems with:
delta.co.za (could be GMC, could be anything really)
usedcars.co.za (too generic to claim as theirs)

Of course, things have changed since I last had to do this so maybe it is a little more difficult now...

Speak to Uniforum

Hey

I've had a similar problem - speak to the legal department in Uniforum who will guide you on the procedure. However its an uphill battle as if the domain is listed under a different owner. In my situation, my client decided to go with a new domain because of all the hassle. But there are avenues to pursue should you want to.

Cheers

What I don't understand is why would anybody want to force another person to be their client against their will?

Is it the R2,000 a year for the R50 "investment" they paid to Uniforum?

OK, I had to do this once, also where the domain name were registered in a different name than the client.

There is a form, that coza registar will provide you with, to be filled out, and then this form, you take to the police station to get stamped as an "affidavit", you then fax this form, with the relevant other info they require back to coza registar, and then they will update the domain manually for you.

Dankie Kraai!

I'll get hold of Uniforum legal department on Monday.

BUT, how do we force the other guys to drop the domain from their DNS once the changes are made? Anybody downstream from them will still see the domain in question with their records.

Not sure how this works. Uniform will be updating the nameservers on all Nat and Int DNS to point to the new name servers as per the updated affidavit. They do this manually, so no emails are going out to any parties. In other words, I think, it does not matter if the previous host still thinks the domain is on their own name servers, as it will not be in reality.
