Hi everyone

I *might* have an opportunity to move back to Durban. I have been living in Johannesburg for 18 years, but a pretty good job opportunity has come up, and I might be keen to move back to the coast. The company is based in Umhlanga, but I'm a bit out of touch with the areas, traffic and commuting. For some background, I grew up in the Highway area.
A quick glance at the neighbourhoods around Umhlange seem very expensive (within my R1.5M budget). Is commuting from the Pinetown/New Germany/Westville areas feasible? Other areas I should be looking at?
I would need a pet friendly complex or free standing house for a small family, so that puts apartments out, which there are plenty of.

Traffic pretty heavy from there to Umhlanga but no where near Joburg standards. The crime pretty bad in the Pinetown area. Did you look at Durban North?

Durban North Area will be ideal - 10 Minutes to 30 Minutes drive - depending on traffic.

I would avoid the Upper Highway area and Westville - not great at the moment. Plus, there is Fields Hill. Would also recommend Durban North - even Bluff is quite nice.

durban north would be a bit better for traffic and within durban theres a lot of variety in regards to property prices

Lucky fish. I feel it’s time to move to the coast. This gauteng feel just does not entertain me. Unfortunately for some reason a lot of places in durbs that are looking are Microsoft shops

Umhlanga and Durban North would be your best bet.Try and buy on the sea facing side of Northway/Umhlanga Rocks Drive , as the other side is close to North Coast road , and the redhill cemetry. There is also La Lucia , Herwood Park , Prestondale but again it depends on your budget. At R1.5million you will struggle.R1.5million might get you a 1 or 2 bedroom flat close to Gateway.

Ok reading the ops email again , it looks like your best bet is Glen Anil , Glen Hills , Park Hill , Durban North and Sunningdale.Since they close to dodgy areas i would be very careful as these are crime hotspots.Try amd push for the sea facing side if possible

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I'll try and stick to the northern suburbs, plus it's closer to the beach fronts which is a big plus. Hopefully I can fly down in 2 weeks, drive around for a bit and have a look.

I moved around durban quite a bit. My best by far was the Glenashley/ LaLucia area. It was just perfectly central for me.

Pinetown just seemed a bit too quiet and foresty. Like there were eyes on me all the time.

As many have said look at Durban North. Stay away from Crimetown.

If Durban north was a no go, I'd look north towards Umhloti etc before Crimetown way.

Forgot to mention Mount Edgecombe but there they have a set colour scheme meaning you can't paint your house whatever colour you want to paint it.

La Lucia is a great suburb. If I moved to Durbs and worked in Umhlanga it is where I would try live hands down.

Thanks everyone . It's all becoming a little bit more real now. Might have to fly down in the next 2-3 weeks and have a look at the suburbs.

Live in pinetown and work in Umhlanga... Trip to work is 25 Mins on a good day and 40 on a bad day...

Nothing wrong with some parts of pinetown or Westville...

Out of interest, roughly which area? I used to live in Padfield Park for some time, was nice back then.

I live across the freeway in Pinelands...

Padfield park is still nice in parts but new Germany proper is encroaching on the area...

It seems the Pineland Ashley Hattons and farningham ridge areas are more popular due to access to freeways and all around safety these days.

this was my suggestion - umdloti 10 minute traffic free commute to umhlanga
i lived there for a short while, still have a house there directly opp the beach
