So I've given up on Telkom and now I'm thinking of getting an iBurst account again. Funny how even Telkom can sell a 4Mbit line, deliver 26KBit and then say we're getting what we paid for - "faster" DSL. Build a nation.

Anyway, I have an old 1MBit iBurst desktop modem and I was considering getting one of the uncapped packages. I just wanted to ask a few questions :)

1. What is the difference between the uncapped and uncapped plus packages?

2. Is this REALLY uncapped or is it "uncapped"?

3. When I left iBurst, they had completely blocked all forms of P2P. Is this still the case? What is the shaping like?

4. How is iBurst for products like Skype etc?

5. Any warnings or cautions? Have they at least improved their service a bit? I last used them in 2007.

Have a 1mbps modem and 20gb a month, very good at the moment, havnt had any problems with signal or speed. It does seem torrents are very slow but do work.

How slow is very slow? Do you manage to get them to work at full line speed between midnight and 8am?

Between 00h00 and 08h00 iBurst is unshaped. So you download at full speeds depending on your signal and tower congestion.

Get the Max 25+ package, which gives you 25GB and an extra 25GB between midnight and 08h00. That's a total of 50GB per month.

If you are happy, you can always upgrade to uncapped later on, without paying a migration fee. Unless you downgrade your package (R99).

Thanks for the advice :) I am just a little concerned at the very negative feedback in some of the threads on here about iburst and I worry that I might be jumping out of the pan and into the fire.

On my Telkom line at the moment I can sometimes get about half my line speed if I use a multithreaded download at 4am. But I am never able to stream YouTube videos or browse the iTunes music store (preview tracks etc) without waiting at least 10 to 15 times the length of the video to give it time to buffer. In general, is the browsing experience (including streaming) okay on iBurst?

I'm looking at the 25+ package - it seems really worthwhile. I do download but my main thing is that I need my Internet connection to work properly for non-P2P services.

With iBurst, it boils down to signal, location and tower congestion. I personally get +- 300 Kbps during the day and +-900 kbps late in the evening.

With YouTube you do have to wait a few seconds to give it time to buffer, so don't expect "real time" video with YouTube.

Browsing is fine with iBurst, much faster in the evenings, but it all depends on location and signal.

If you are really not sure, you can test the waters with the cheap "Playa 5+" package (R149) and see if you are happy.

If not, then you can PM Ronald and ask someone to phone you from iBurst and cancel your subscription.

Go month2month and don't sign any contracts.

Today is a good day with iBurst, everyone is down at the coast...:D

I think i will give this a shot. After my experiences with Sentech Mywireless, I pretty much refused to ever sign a contract with any ISP ever again so it goes without saying that I will stick to month to month :) I will get this going this week when I'm back :)

I suspect you'll find the same for all the ISPs. People only post here when they have a problem, not when everything is working well.

True. But I sent a message on their web site a few days ago now and they can't even bother to contact me so I can sign up in the first place. This is off to a great start.

1. What is the difference between the uncapped and uncapped plus packages?

The latter has a less restrictive FUP.

2. Is this REALLY uncapped or is it "uncapped"?

It is a hybrid were you are guaranteed your minimum speed but have the ability to use a daily bucket to burst at full speed.

3. When I left iBurst, they had completely blocked all forms of P2P. Is this still the case? What is the shaping like?

P2P is still shaped but this restriction is lifted for 8 hours after midnight.

4. How is iBurst for products like Skype etc?

I use it 24x7 without any problems.

5. Any warnings or cautions? Have they at least improved their service a bit? I last used them in 2007.

Invest in an external antennae.

i signed up for this service in mid december and its been ok, Iuse Skype quite a bit and mostly it works... if it doesnt, i have found that a reboot of the modem does help... i am apparently in a GOOD area for reception but dont really get more than

I used to have Telkom up to 10MB and the service was fantastic! i connected at 8MB ALL ther time....unfortunately I moved from Norwood to North Riding (only unfortunately because of Telkom :) )and Telkom cant give me service here...so iBurst it is at a third of the price.

Just installed it.. seems quite good for everything, certainly snappier for browsing/youtube/etc than my 4MB congested exchange ADSL line. I tried torrents and it's HEAVILY shaped (essentially blocked - 2KB/s)... will see how it is after midnight.

It's quite strange having Gmail load so quickly as well!

What is your location?

So, how was the torrents downloading last night? I've got a premium account with Filesonic, so my downloads fly after midnight. I don't use torrents, so I can't comment on that.

Telkom, What! still elitist in my view. ADSL lines in so called disadvantaged areas is a zilt. Approached them 6 months ago for broadband services and got disappointed. Iburst was my real option and saviour and does work fine in my so called disadvantaged area. Speed is good. When is Telkom folding??

Just to follow up on this - I managed to find a router that allows an MTU size change and I've been using iBurst. I'm VERY pleased with it, it performs better than my congested 4Mbit telkom line.

iBurst signal strength + Towers where are they?

Hi there, i am thinking of moving back to iBurst i stay in Bryanston near William Nicol by Investment Cars / Bryanston Shopping Center.

Does any body know if there are iBurst towers nearby? and is the the signal strength any good if there are no tower's nearby.
