Moving Back to SA, need help with choosing provider

I'm moving back to SA, Johannesburg, Randburg to be exsact. :)

I need to choose a privider for all my telecomunications and the market seems to be flooded with companies and options, however for a bad price as far as I can see :(

So which company (ISP) shood I shoose.
This is what I need/would like:

-Always on ADSL, it is hard to know if it is 10gb or 30gb as I have never had that in mind befoure.

- A ISP, used to be with Global.co.za (Gave me a great e-mail address and service back then I moved in year 2000)

-VoIP (this to lower the phone line expence)

-Ability to set up a inhouse wifi system

-Ability to have 1-3 pcs/macs to connected at one time.

-A cell phone provider


In addition i can note that my Telkom bill back in 2000 was about R2000 a mouth, due to international call and dial up service.

Definitely go with ADSL as the wireless providers at this stage, while getting better slowly, are still not as reliable as ADSL.

Start out with 192k ADSL with an Axxess 10 gig account, you can always upgrade either if you need faster access or more usage. ADSL upgrade costs nothing but for downgrading Telkom charges an "admin" fee so best to start at the lowest speed and upgrade if/when you need to.

All this will cost R329 + R89 + R399 = R817 per month

Also don't sign the Telkom 24 month contract, rather buy your own router with built in wifi. I'm sure people here will recommend some options in this regard :)
 
What about Voip will I be able to get thet at 192 and with Telkom or due I need to look at someone else.

VoIP should work just great on 192K, I used to run Skype on 56K dial-up which was not the best, certainly not for business but it did work fairly well. So provided your line is good, it should be perfect.
 
I have a 512/256 adsl (uncapped through a UUNet reseller) and a series of apple airports situated around the house - works pretty well with the bonus of being able to stream audio to where ever I've put a airport base. I use skype all the time and have SkypeIn numbers in the US and UK. Before adsl I was on ISDN and my phone bill was rarely under r3000 per month so I've halved that now.

You didnt mention what country you’re coming from but I would assume that you can get most of the kit there for a lower price.

I'm coming from Atlanta Georgia USA, so I dont know if there is a compatebility issue with The US and SA. The only thing I'm aware of the power supply witch is 110 here as suppose to 220 in SA. However this can be fixed with an adopter

It also have the feeling that Telkom is the best provider, however there are a lot of companies out there whom seam to be coming along. As well I feel better by going with a local privat supplier as suppose to Telkom. Not becouse Telkom is bad, but simply to support local bussiness.

Anybody have an opinion on this?

Does'nt matter who you choose, Telkom will have their fingers in the honey in some way or another...

If you want to support local business, you're going to have to get a wireless connection which has proven to be unreliable in SA (eg. IBurst and MyWireless)
 
As you say you're running Macs you cant really go wrong by picking up a (or 2 if the place you're moving into is big) Airport Express base stations. They're 100-240v and setting things up by WDS couldnt be easier. Stick one in your adsl router and you're good to go.

Whats also nice with them is they're extremely portable (roughly the same size as a PB power adaptor) and you can plug your usb printer into it and share that too. I'd bring those along with you as prices are better there.

With adsl here you’ll be paying Telkom regardless. Even if you don’t get your internet access through them (UUNet is the only alternative at this time) you’re still paying for the line. Also be prepared to wait for the installation – assuming your exchange is enabled and there is an available port - count on a couple weeks min.
 
Thanks a million, very good advise. I will be sure to get what I need from here. I will also be following the developments in the market to see if UUNet develops into viable competitors to Telkom.

I will also make sure I order my line in time.
