.. from the UK, where I currently have 20gig capped download, at up to 16Meg download (768 upstream), and I am paying £5/month.

I'm pretty shocked to see what South Africa is offering. Anyone know why it's so pathetic there? Telkoms fault?

Are there any deals that give you at least 10 gig/month with maybe a meg download speed? For less than a grand?

UK has it's bad points, but hells teeth, I'm going to miss my proper broadband!!!

Feo, you are, and I will be too soon. When I first got ADSL here in Scotland, we started off with a 512k line, and 256k upstream. There was no such think as caps, or what they call 'Fait Usage Policies'. Then in late 2001, we got 1 meg! Then in 2003, 2 meg! Then it started climbing... 4 meg, 8 meg.. now we're on 16 meg. I'm 1.5miles from the exchange, so was only getting around 4 meg, but they upgraded the exchange late year, and hey presto! I now have just over 500 hours on Battlefield2 (I have quite a high rank.. :) ), loads of large videos on YouTube, hosted my own web and mail servers for me, family (in SA as well) and friends... and basically, don't gibve a stuff. I'm an MSDN subscriber, so download everything...

I am going to miss it...

I'm not quite sure of the pricing structure there. So MrG mentioned 10Gig for R490. Then I assume there is other fees involved to Tekom? What would my overall cost be then? 10 meg is fine for me, as I've only gone to 16 meg once, but that was because I downloaded Vista a few times. I've downloaded the demo of Command and Conquer 3 earlier this week... 1.2Gig... That would ruine most of your days... hehe..

Anyways, please do tell what the total costs would be. Also, whats the speed with that 10gig package?

The price consists of 3 different units.

Approx prices
R100 for Telkom Voice Line
ISP (WebAfrica 10GB for example)
and your line itself for DSL (DSL 4Mbit R650)

ISP packages generally go at the speed of your line, Cybersmart and expensive uncapped products vary in speed on the account side of things, but generally they go at the speed of your line.

The DSL line speed is what you purchase.. i.e 4Mbps

It's pissing down with rain, a Nandos that coists R57 in South Africa costs £16 (R190) here.. A litre of diesel for my Gold mk5 costs £0.95 (R13), and it will give me more free time as my parents can look after my 20 month old daughter there. Costs £10/hour (R135) for a baby sitter here.

All very good reasons :)

But - in SA you pay for schooling, pay for medical, pay more on insurance, pay for armed reaction, pay more for ADSL, pay more for sat TV, etc.

Medical here... we all wish we could rather pay for private medical only, instead of NHS payments. NHS sucks. I had a sore knee in South Africa before leaving 6 years ago. Went to a doctor there, and he operated the next day.

It got sore here in the UK. I was put on a waiting list just to get it seen. 8 months later... they looked at it, and said it was fine.

NHS sucks... and we pay for it, heavily. Also, if you want private here, you pay £110 for a family of 3. That's not far off what you pay there for private...

Schooling.. can't comment. Was back in SA for a holiday a month back, and the schools looks pretty bad compared to when I left school in 93..

For Sky TV (I have Sky+, the PVR version) I pay £42 a month.. about the same as there no?

So, pluses and minuses... You have sun, sport, great social lives, nearby family, healthy living, cheap food, cheap service, very pricey cars, very pricey electronics...

I think the life style in SA rocks compared to here... You have me on the schooling though, and security. Too extremely important areas I had to think very hard about. We're nearly complete in our Australia permanent residence visa, so we're off to Aus in 2008. :)

Back to the point though, I'm battling to understand the pricing structure there...

So, for the WebAfrica 10gig thing, what are all my costs?

R490 to WebAfrica
The how much to Telkom, and does that include my phone line?

I have been told when leaving the country, accept that it is not South-Africa. As far as the pros and cons go, there are many, but a certain, secure future carries the most weight for me.

Lets say I want the WebAfrica 10gig package at R490/month.

So am I right in saying that my costs would be R490 for the 10gig package from WebAfrica, plus R149 for the 2 gig speed from Telkom? My total costs would then be R639/month, and that's it?

Any other costs/catches?

I think you're getting the 2gb package confused with the line rental. If you get the 10gb from WA you wont need the 2gb from telkom.

Instead . . Line rental for the 'up to' 4Mbps is r516.00 (incl vat) and then you need to add the analogue line rental which is r99.92

Total - r1105.92 :(

That site is confusing then. I want a 2 gig line from Telkom. On the site, it says:

"TelkomInternet AllAccess (You may chose your own Internet Service Provider)"

Which indicates to me, they provide the line, I just get the ISP to provide the data.

Under that, I see this:

"2 GB TelkomInternet-AllAccess - - 130.70 149.00"

That indicates to me, they provide a 2gb line for R149... and with the statement above that, I just need the ISP.

So, R149 + R490.

Where does the "Line rental for the 'up to' 4Mbps is r516.00 (incl vat)" come into it?

Frustrating isnt it :)

http://www.telkom.co.za/athome/products/dsl/home_how_much.html

Connectivity | Excl VAT | Incl VAT | Excl VAT | Incl VAT
DSL Up to 1024kbps | 383.77 | 437.50 | 452.63 | 516.00

that is the ADSL line rental only - it is currently 'up to 4096' as a trial.

On top of that you need to add your data allocation - in your case the Web Africa 10gb package.

EDIT - http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php?photo=543

The red box is your connectivity - iow the line without any data
The blue box is TelkomInternet data rates.
