I am looking for advice on areas to look at renting in Durban.
The company is located in Umhlanga.
I don't mind a bit of drive.

I can afford 9k a month on housing.

What areas can I look at within 20 to 30 KM of Umhlanga?

Looking to rent or buy. That would determine a lot. Traffic into umhlanga in the morning can be a pain in the ass in the morning and evenings. So best to try find a place close to the office. Umhlanga and Durban North would be a good place to look.

I would choose the location very carefully, traffic going in the wrong direction at peak times is insane, last I was there bumper to bumper traffic for 10km isn't unusual if you are coming from inland suburbs.

Best would be to stay in Umhlanga as traffic becomes an issue until the new interchange is complete.
Otherwise Morningside/Musgrave area is good

I'd stay away from New Germany. Crime is really high in that area.

Crime is high everywhere at the moment...

But to the op, I would suggest finding a place near the office for the first 6 months to find your feet then look around at areas you find interesting

Im in Westville crime is here as well as well as DBN north. Its everywhere you not going to escape it.

I never said their is no crime. Crime in Westville, Morningside etc is bad, but not as bad as New Germany.

Traffic wise, better to be nearer to Umhlanga...
Although, for 9k you might only be able to get a flat.

I live in Sunningdale, a few km from Gateway, and it is very convenient for Umhlanga. Wexford Park complex has 2 bed flats for R8k, 1 bed for R7k, though they go quickly.
Gateway as previously mentioned, has a lot of rentals, slightly more expensive than Sunningdale.
Durban North has granny flats

All of the above are 10 mins from Umhlanga, unless commuting at peak times.
