Hey so i have never used linux before,i'm on win7 still, didn't bother going for win8 back then

I'm currently studying web development html/css/jquery/javascript , i know more or less how to work developer tools and xamp. And i know my way around windows more than the average joe.I'm afraid it will be a struggle to start over again, and another thing i'm looking to get employed next year, and not many people use linux in their company's as i understand

So i was thinking to do a dual boot,i'm getting win 8.1 (yes original from a friend) I really wanna do a dual boot so that i can still have access and still have knowledge in both,so that it can benefit me when i'm employed

So what linux should i use,a guy i know who does php coding, uses linux and said i should use mint
And any links u know and tried for a dual boot or your own guide would be helpfull

Thanks

I dont know much about Mint, but I have tried Ubuntu, which isn't too bad actually. From what I gather, you just need a good internet connection because there's a load of open source software you can download from the Software Repository.

Also the cool thing about it, is you can kind of install it inside of windows. If you download the Installer/Software ISO and mount it, you can install it as a program in windows and after rebooting you can choose Ubuntu and it install it for you. Thereafter when booting, you can choose windows/ubuntu, you can also just uninstall from windows programs as well.

Look up virtualbox. Rather install a Linux distro on a virtual machine. It's clean and hassle-free.

Mint tends to be the most painless way for windows users to switch over as its a familiar look and feel and you can use mint/ubuntu help to solve most issues.
I run mint as well at home on a few machines but I also still have a windows desktop and a few windows laptops.

If you have the bandwidth download a few of the popular distrobutions live disks and run each of them of the disk/usb for a while until you have a favorite.

I tried that a long time ago,and it was something about virtualization or something that my laptop doesn't support. I had to check it with speccy etc,i read it on a guide. So i figured a dual boot is best

Thanks,i know i will learn pretty quick in linux and get used to it,i was just more worried about coding in it and the web browsers in linux.

Hi Gonzo.B

Ubuntu is one of the most popular distro's out there and pretty easy to grasp. So it would recommend that, you can use any web browser on it and programs like xampp are supported on it. Very simple to install, I run it on a separate partition on my home pc alongside Windows XP ,7 and 10 (yes I switch OS's often). I wouldn't go to 8.1 unless you have to since windows 10 is around the corner and will be a free upgrade for you from 7.

Dude, when I installed Mint on my notebook i learned everything I needed to in a weeks time. There were a few growing pains but that's nothing google could not fix. And don't put on 8.1, just not worth it, rather keep win7 on and upgrade it to win10 later. The Mint installer will allow you to resize current NTSF partitions... just make sure to properly check and defrag them first.

openSUSE is the other option if you are feeling ambitious, lots of more stuff initially than Mint.

There are lots ways for coding in Linux just don't expect any M$ products like Visual Studio to work perfectly in it :D, pretty much all non-windows browsers work fine and there are proper coding IDE's like Eclipse that work fine natively. The only real problems I have had is that no open source app can properly replace M$ Office and Corel DRAW... the alternatives are just plain not there yet unfortunately.

Ubuntu or Mint.

I prefer Mint. It is much closer to the Windows environment than the rest and it is a good way to get into things concerning Linux.

I have heard that Elementary is just as good but I haven't installed it yet.

Thanks odly

The thing is the upgrade to 10 is only valid for a year,i'm getting 8.1 basically for free. That's why i wanna go 8.1.Thanks i didn't know about the browsers,i'm currently reading about linux to get ore info.Dual boot is what i wanna go for

Looks like mint is the one,i know ubuntu might get me into it,but i'm a quick learner so i'll go for mint

No it's valid for the life of the machine it is installed on. If you do not upgrade from win7/8 within a year of the free upgrade offer you will have to purchase it.

I wonder how many times this has to be repeated because the message is simply not getting across.

PS MS will also allow you to download the win10 iso for free so should you wish to reinstall you won't have to go win7/8-->win10.

What i meant by it was the upgrade will have 10 on it for ever yes,but if i do a reinstall in the future i can not go back to 10

If you are developing for Windows, then the best thing is to stay on that platform.

Linux is a disappointing experience and has been for many years.

vi, grep, sed, bash, regular expressions and the whole damn toolkit got to you eh ?

Yes of course you can reinstall Win 10 (on the same PC), by using the ISO. And the ISO will be available as a free download from Microsoft, if you've upgraded legally.

GUI mouse warriors.

They never get as far as to understand the wonder that is the command line and how much power it gives you over Windows.

And therefore it "sucks". They never admit that they actually just sucked at Linux.
