Moving hosts ... and the implications of doing so

I run IMAP for ease of access, but am always running near the limit of what my hosting account allows me (disc space).

As far as I know no South African host will provide unlimited disc space, yet most US-based hosts do. Therefore taking the hosting offshore is a real consideration. Sadly.

Should I do so, how can I back up the current mailbox histories before migrating?

I am allowed 5000 MB Diskspace for Emails and 1000000 MB traffic allowance from Hetzner (Germany based server)

Unlimited seems a bit excessive ?

Why not just point your MX records to Google Apps or Outlook.com ????

Outlook.com is free with "Domains Live" and Google Apps (not free anymore) is still affordable.

Even unlimited hosts will throw a brick in your direction if you start whacking up terabytes of storage space.

Unlimited hosts aren't really unlimited. There's still AUP's that you need to adhere to otherwise they force you to upgrade to another package.

In any case, I'd maybe take up that Microsoft online hosting, it's international and provides you with a decent sized mailbox AFAIK?

I know Rackspace offers a MS Exchange package with an MS Outlook license for $12 a month and gives you 20gb per mailbox which is more than enough

At the moment I have a 400 MB limit, and 95% of that is taken up by email.
Two employees in business, both deal with many and large attachments. Keeping a history of email is vital, at least for a 2-year (or more) period.

IMAP is the only sensible option, as the accounts are accessed by a number of devices, and they need to sync.

Fairly recently I have started posting duplicates off to gmail accounts, so there is that at least.

My thinking is to host with somebody like hostmonster.com. Any thoughts on that?

You get what you pay for, I'd go with the Rackspace hosted Exchange solution, it has big attachment sizes and 20gb per mailbox

Have had a sniff around, and can do a little better than I am now but will soon run into the same problem, hence my thoughts of taking this offshore.

Im an unlimited host. It comes with unlimited pricing. Use as much as you want

Go Google Business Apps, awesome pricing and it can handle attachments up to 10GB (with gdrive) in size and you can buy up to 16TB of storage. 100GB is $5 a month.

One day I will be able to source the manufacturer of an unlimited capacity hard disk That being said, 400 Megabytes is not a lot at all and you should have no trouble finding an alternative.

moving your imap mailbox shouldn't be much of a problem, but like ghoti said you can try google apps, we at http://www.haloweb.co.za use it, good prices and fantastic product
