I'm moving house soon and have already asked Telkom whether they could move my line. The new place is barely 1 Km from the current place, and Telkom has already confirmed that I'll be staying on the same exchange, and be keeping my existing number.

Now the catch is - apparently I'll be paying a couple of hundred rand's connection fee - is this the same as the normal installation fee? (which you can choose to do yourself). I told the lady that I'm fine with self-installation, but she waffled on about something and that I cannot get out paying the fee.

Has anyone else had the same experience? Maybe she was referring to a standard line installation charge, and not just the charge for an ADSL line...

get the line installed in the new as soon as you can (while you have the existing line). The 2nd line should be free at the new spot. that will avoid the installation charge for the line. Then once you are there and the line is installed, then do the self install for dsl.

Telkom will milk every last penny out of you if they can. They'll prolly charge you R220 for the normal phoneline activation, then also the R440 for ADSL line installation cost.
