I'm going to be moving end of this month, and currently have a 4mb uncapped account which I'm moving as well.

Now i get a mail from mweb that i need to downgrade to *dial up* in order for them to apply for a new ADSL line.

Is it just me or does that make no sense at all?

I'm sitting with a similar situation. The flat I'm moving to has ADSL from mweb, (384).

To upgrade to 4meg I have to ask the current owner to cancel his mweb, and then apply for a new ADSL line from Telkom.

Mweb apparently cannot simply transfer the line to Telkom, and they cant give me a "naked" mweb ADSL line. To get 4meg from Mweb I have to sign up for their uncapped account as well (at a cost of R900 a month).

So now I have to transfer the telephone line into my name, cancel mweb and then apply for telkom ADSL. I'm wondering what will happen if I apply for the "telkom ADSL" while the "mweb ADSL" is still active on the line? This is in all probability what will happen, as the old owner has to give mweb a month's notice to cancel!

Hi Elax

I sent you a PM to answer your questions. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask me.

Pls give your answers here as well, MWEB. It's in everyone's interest to know how to go about it.

ask mweb to put your 4Meg data on hold, pay the line rental for the month or ask them to put that on hold also. Then get telkom to install your new line at new house and ask mweb to move adsl to that line. then cancel old line (you can ask telkom to block it so no one can use the line while you wait for the cancel.)

Hi all

Certainly, basically, this is an example I provided:

Example: the new premises you moving to doesn't support a 4Mb line, or you have to wait for Telkom to install a line, then instead of paying for a 4Mb package with us, you pay for a smaller package.

We advise to downgrade to a smaller package, ie dial up or an email account, to ensure you keep your email address. We need to make sure the correct landline number is assigned to your account for billing reasons.

I trust this information will assist answering some questions.

Regards,
MWEB Ops

No offense meant here, but this is exactly why I recommend to customers NEVER to take an ADSL line with an ISP (or use their email for that matter).

Look, I know that the solution offered above is the only thing MWEB can do as "freezing" accounts here is a joke. The reality is, they are trying to do you a favor to let you pay less while they get the line sorted. Seems like pretty good sense to me.

Next time, go with the Devil Spawn to avoid problems when moving house and transferring line. If not transferring, then you really are screwed!

Couldn't agree with you more, I had such a mission to get my ADSL line back from SAOL when their uncapped went **puff** - never again. As far as I know ISP's don't transfer your line when you want it back they just cancel it.

tbf i think in this instance the op would have the same problem even if the line was wit telkom. after all when you move places, telkom doesn't give you any guarantees you will have a line where you are moving to. and when you will get that line if it is available.

I would have checked before I moved - if the area doesnt support at least 4Mbps then why move there :)

When we moved in here we made arrangements with the previous people that lived here ( they were moving far away & could not keep the line) got their account number & paid the rental for a month then provided them with the receipt so they could see it was paid. then we went together to a Telkom shop & transfered the account over. (I did not have a Telkom account prior to that)

that's a fairly good way to go about it

Telkom phoned me this am. They'll be installing the line with adsl tomorrow. That's less than a week :)

I have a 4mb uncapped package with SAOL and want to move to MWEB. I phoned MWEB and they say that after SAOL transfer the line to Telkom, it will take 10 days or more to transfer it to MWEB. I asked them if this means that I wont have internet access for that period and they said no. I can get them to activate the line while its being tranferred so i can still have access. I'm confused about this. If they can activate the line, why do I have to wait for it to be transferred? Any info about this is appreciated.

Then presumably the line remains active, but there is some administrative delay on Telkom's part.

It makes no difference. If there is currently no ADSL where you're moving, then you're going to have to apply and there will be a delay.

Something similar for me. I sold my flat and applied at the end of Feb for my MWEB 384k uncapped + line rental account to be downgraded to just the 384k uncapped. Received all the emails say that it will be done at the end of March and that the line will be released so that I can cancel the telkom account. Lo and behold, I've been billed for the uncapped + line rental and now I can't get hold of anyone at MWEB.

Hi HWA

Would you mind please dropping me a PM with your MWEB account details.
This doesn't sound right and I'd like to investigate the matter for you.

Kind Regards,
MWEB Guy

You are mistaken. My own ISP told me they could do it if I wanted. If it's a condition of the contract, then you would be a bit stuck. We all know that it is not compulsory at Mweb to transfer a line.

Lol. Yet another billing failure. You aren't alone. They did a similar thing to my cousin and if you look at Hello Peter, there are dozens of complaints all about billing mistakes.
