As all good things come to an end, so must my years and years (nine in total) of studying.
I got a job in Stellenbosch (must just my nick to StellenboschWorker, or something similar) but my wife-to-be has work just outside Cape Town.
Currently we live in Somerset West, the drive into campus is fine, not a lot of traffic but for her it is rather tedious. Her work is directly of the N2, so we are considering moving in that general direction. But the problem is, in between Somerset West and Cape Town (or more specifically Kenilworth/Claremont, which is too close to Cape Town) there isn't any suburbs to live, or am I mistaken? Can anybody give some advice? If we move to Cape Town, how is the traffic, on the N2, to Stellenbosch?

Where exactly dose she work? Obs? Airport? Gatesville?

You can also travel down Baden Powell to stellies - slow road but such an amazing scenic route.

Basically in Obs...

I currently drive Baden Powell to campus.

Has she considered catching the bus into work? I've been doing it for over 2 years as I hate driving (and I suck at it). Bus drives through Obs all the way to CBD. I live in Bridgewater and it takes 70-90 minutes in peak traffic.

Thats an option if you still want to stay in Somerset West.

She always took the bus to work when she stayed in Bellville, so I don't think she will have a problem with it... will go and have a lok at the bus schedules to see if it can work out.

They are out of date and a bit off but basically we have 4 buses in the morning leaving Strand through to Somerset West on main road. Using the police station bus stop as a guideline, departure times are 5:40, 6:00, 6:20, 6:40 and arrival times in Obs is 60 minutes max (sometimes 45 minutes).

Departure times from Obs at the KFC (last stop before N2) is 16:30, 16:50, 17:20, 17:40 - but this can be dependant on traffic and be later. Arrival times in Somerset West police station is no more than 60 minutes later.

Ticket prices are R110 for a week, R480 per month - tickets are valid from date of purchase so you can buy a monthly in the middle of the month.

Buses are safe and reliable, very reliable. During N2 protests the drivers took alternate routes and we where about 10-15 minutes later than usual.

There is also the train option. Business express is 3 times the bus cost but is also a great alternative. Regarding busing into town, I found that quite a few SWest guys used to drive through to the train station in Strand in order to guarantee a seat on the bus. I never had problems with catching buses to town although we have gone back to driving in.

Problem with Business Express is it skips Van Der Stel station (I can see the platform from my kitchen). The lack of seats on the bus is less of a problem than it use to be but it still happens. More a problem if you get on at Waterstone or Firgrove now.

But train or bus still beats driving in.

And all the Joburg MyB(elie)B(ers) are going DAFUQ you Capies smoking that you catch a train or a bus, never mind encourage a women to use it as well !!!!

We are close to the Firgrove stop... She usually leaves at about 6am, so I can drop her at the bus stop that time for the 6am or 6:20 bus and she drives back at 17h'ish, which will also be fine. The KFC in Obs is walking distance from her work... so that can work...

With the damn high petrol prices I will have to find a bus that goes to Techno Park!

And your a winner. There is also now a Stellenbosch bus :) But just cycle through, its not that far or get a motor bike - I use to commute to Technopark on my motorbike

If she wants to try the bus its R25.10 one-way else she can just buy a weekly ticket. The bus stops at Waterstone, just after Waterstone (500m), entrance to Firgrove station and then in Firgrove opposite The Huntsman.

we must be staying on the same road. I'm alson in Bridgwater and can see the platform from my kitchen. If the trains were more reliable i would take it more often as i work in Pinelands not too far from Mutual station. Also wish that business express would stop at van der stel. I took the train for about 3 months before going back to using my car.

I'm from the southern suburbs and would not move back for anything.

For the OP, maybe Pinelands or Rondeboshe could suit your needs? It is the only suburbs close to the N2 that would be suitable. No idea as to commuting to Stellies from there.
