I was wondering if moving from ISPs would speed up my internet? I currently have a 1mb/s uncapped Telkom account but I was thinking of moving to another ISP. Any suggestions?

Nope. To speed up your internet you will need to upgrade to 2meg.

Hi There,
Before you move you need to ask yourself some questions:
What do you use the internet for? Is it for gaming? Downloading?
If it is for gaming then speed is important.
If you are doing a lot of downloading then you may find an unshaped account at 1MB is perfectly adequate.

Once you know what you are going to use it for then you can go and shop around. Remember that the higher the speed the more the cost is going to be.

Have a think about it and then put the answers below and see the suggestions that come up

Unless his current Telkom Uncapped account under performs, in which case the answer would be yes.

Majority of people have flawless TI accounts so that wouldn't be it.

I use it mainly for downloading and for watching YouTube videos but lately I have been experiencing a lot of down time. For example the videos I watch take extremely long to buffer and it does not even play without pausing at 360p.
What seems to work for a few minutes is when I switch the router on and off again.

What causes the slow speed? I've got a up-to-date anti-virus and an extra firewall and something for malware so I can't figure out why my internet is so slow most of the time.

My parents have a capped account with Telkom. They have experienced the exact same thing the past few weeks. I also have to agree that rebooting the router serves as a temporary solution, but after a short while everything becomes slow again. I'd like to get to the bottom of this as well.

My guess is if it worked fine before and is not working now, its due to exchange congestion or copper wire degradation due to all the wet weather in CT.

Go to webafrica.co.za, get a free 5 gig account for 14 days and test that out.

Run a speedtest (www.speedtest.net) using your telkom account and then using the webafrica account, if they give the same result then its the line, not the ISP.

IMO 1mbs is not good enough for streaming youtube on 360p, it will need to buffer.

If you’re using firefox the SmartVideo for YouTube addon might help - YMMV.
